Rahman's 'Satyameva Jayathe' released

After 'Vande Mataram' and 'Jana Gana Mana', musical legend A.R. Rahman released his version of 'Satyameva Jayathe' yesterday. This is Rahman's second song with the Super Heavy Band. This song will be premiered exclusively on a leading FM channel today across 22 cities!

International legends Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Joss Stone and Damian Marley have collaborated for this song as part of the global band Super Heavy. Interestingly, Mick Jagger has sung in Sanskrit for this track.

The band's first album ‘Miracle Worker’ was released recently.

Rock version of Vande Mataram merges two cultures together

Mumbai- After the westernized version of Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, now we have a rock version of Vande Mataram in Gandhi to Hitler.

rock-version-of-vande-mataram-merges-two-cultures-togetherThe song has been sung by Vasundara, Aman P and Bensen Baby. The original version of the National song of India Vande Mataram was composed and written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, which was later sung by melody queen Lata Mangeshkar and music maestro A.R Rahman.

The rock version of the song is truly magical. It is a fantastic way of bringing two cultures together.

This song has been composed targeting the youths of today’s generation who are crazy for rock music.

Sing together

A few weeks ago, I heard the Yale Whiffenpoofs, the 102-year old acappella group, perform in New Delhi. If you’ve heard collegiate male acappella groups before, you’ll agree that there’s something very endearing about fresh-faced, earnest-looking young men in black tuxedos and white gloves singing melodiously and in complete harmony in those wonderful baritone, bass and tenors. It can engender a warm, fuzzy feeling in the most indifferent heart.

Perhaps it’s to do with college nostalgia, a yearning for youth and idealism and a time when the world seemed yours to conquer. Or perhaps it’s just a function of the repertoire of collegiate acappellas, from rearranged hymns to Bollywood melodies or jazz-influenced pop, blues, Yiddish and rock. (The Whiffenpoofs began their performance with a Czech marching song!) Whatever the reason, listening to the ’Poofs, was enchanting. Their polished performance reminded me of Stanford University’s all-male South Asian focus acappella group, Raagappella, with its repertoire of Bollywood pop and traditional Hindustani or Carnatic raag-based music and original fusion pieces.

I remember listening, spellbound, as Indians, Taiwanese Hispanic, Japanese and blond Caucasians dressed in long, cream kurtas sang “Yeh Lamhe”, “Vande Mataram” and other Hindi (and Tamil) songs, instantly transporting me to the homeland’s rain-drenched monsoons, mangoes, sambhar-vada, chai and samosas. Raagappella, one of Stanford’s nine acappella groups, has since gone on to perform with A R Rahman at the Hollywood Bowl.

Acappella has no accompanying instruments, (though contemporary groups imitate the sound of percussion through voice, hands and feet, made most popular by Rockappella). It’s just one among several activities that abound in colleges abroad — the US alone has over 1,200 student-run acappella groups. And for something that is viewed more as a geeky activity — the real cool dudes are still the rock stars in the college band — acappella is hugely popular and boasts Cole Porter and Art Garfunkel as alum.

College campuses begin thrumming with hundreds of activities around now, from the standard drama, debating and sport, to the more exotic. Over the years, these activities may have changed somewhat, but what they try and encourage — student socialisation and bonding, collaboration, loyalty and pride in one’s college along with some extra-curricular learning and creativity — hasn’t.

Generally speaking, bonds formed during our college years are among our strongest non-familial bonds; the more intense our collaborative experience, the deeper the bond. In today’s Internet-dominated campuses defined by online social networking, it has become even more important for students to engage with each other face-to-face, preferably immersed in collective, meaningful and fun activities — so that they realise virtual interaction can’t replace the real thing.

With India among the fastest growing of the FaceBook community, it is imperative that we not lose our young to the Internet’s Pied Piper. Oh, I’m not saying this because of past debate stirred by Nicholas Carr’s book, The Shallows” which argues that computers, the Internet, Google, Twitter et al are converting us into shallow thinkers and rewiring our brain. Or even because cognitive scientists say that too much digital stimulation can be psychologically unhealthy and constant teenage cellphone use and compulsive texting can inhibit deep thought and cause anxiety. I say this because I intuitively believe that long-term Internet use can devalue and trivialise the human experience, diminishing our desire to socialize, and probably our ability to do so, whereas complex human interaction can vastly improve our cognitive skills — reasoning, contextual thinking, problem-solving, decision-making — so critical to the functioning of society.

Group activities provide a social and creative outlet for students (especially those pursuing more technical fields) but more importantly, also teach tolerance, acceptance, the art of building real relationships, people and life skills, more useful in the long-run than academic degrees.

Bubble Up

PREITY Zinta marked her return to the glamour world with a rather low-profile show, Guiness World Records—Ab India Todega. But now, with her first home production underway, the bubbly actress has turned chat show host for UTV Stars. The show, titled Up, Close & Personal With Preity Zinta went on the floors recently with Akshay Kumar and Farhan Akhtar among her first few guests. The show will feature most of the actress’ close friends from the industry and is supposed to have an informal and fun conversational format. Zinta will sport a glamorous look, designed by her other close friend, designer Surily Goel.

Back to the Altar

AFTER the success of Tanu Weds Manu, R Madhavan isn’t shying away from unusual pairings. In his next film, Shaadi Fast Forward, the actor has been paired opposite Bipasha Basu. Being directed by Ashwini Choudhary, the film also has Madhavan’s colleague from 3 Idiots, Omi Vaidya, in the cast. The film will be shot in Greece. Sounds like fun, but we hope Maddy doesn’t get stuck on romantic comedies revolving around marriage.

Patriotic Beats

A FEW years ago, A R Rahman, with his rendition of Vande Mataram, changed the way the youth connected with the national song. In a similar attempt, the latest track to come out of Rahman’s collaboration with Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Joss Stone and Damien Marley, Satyameva Jayathe, released earlier this week. The song, which is already causing a stir, is the band SuperHeavy’s second track after Miracle Worker. The biggest draw, however, remains Jagger crooning alongside in Sanskrit.

Troopers enter DCI Championships Troopers begin DCI quest Rosemont-based corps is 3rd going into DCI championships in Donaldson Company Announces

Troopers begin DCI quest

Wearing the uniform of the 11th Ohio Cavalry with a few 2011 modifications, the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps from Casper took the field at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Thursday evening with eyes set on the Finals of the Drum Corps International World Championships.

"When you have a drum corps that's ready to throw down, there's nothing like it," said drum major Josh Jensen minutes after the performance in preliminaries. "We'll get up tomorrow and go back at it. It's dedication right there; never giving up."

The Troopers entered the night in 13th place and scored 82.70, dropping to 14th. Places 13 through 15 -- the Glassmen of Toledo, Ohio (82.95), the Troopers, and the Academy of Tempe, Ariz., (82.1) -- were separated by a span of .85 points.

The Spirit of Atlanta entered the night in 14th place, just back of the Troopers, and vaulted to 12th place, scoring 85.5.

The top 12 corps after tonight's round of 25 in the semifinals move on to Saturday's Finals.

The Troopers last made the Finals in 2009, finishing 12th in what was then known as the quarterfinals, 12th in the semifinals and 12th in the Finals. Prior to 2009, it had been 23 years since the Troopers were in the Finals.

Last year, they finished 15th in the quarters and 15th in the semis.

During the performance, DCI blogger Michael Boo explained the Troopers show, "The Road Home," this way: "It's quite lovely and soul searching, tender and reminding us why we want to go home ... And a sunburst in the far right corner with the traditional yellow and white 11th Ohio Cavalry (flags) pouring out of the horns form in a sunburst."

The sunburst was added late in the season, a nod to the Troopers early years under founder Jim Jones.

As the Troopers concluded the performance, Boo wrote, "I don't think the audience would mind seeing them in Finals one bit."

"We had a great run!" said visual staffer Ila Gaponoff immediately after the performance. "The kids brought a lot of energy and emotion and put out a stellar performance."

Troopers executive director Mike Ottoes was hoarse from yelling during the preliminary performance.

"I'm very proud of them," he said. "They did a fantastic job. They did a great job. They had fantastic rehearsals Wednesday night and this morning and it certainly carried over today."

Troopers program staff coordinator William Chumley has described the show's concept as a journey of exploration, discovery, revelation, overcoming and returning.

"The music sounds like the wide-open American spaces and has an adventurous American spirit," he said earlier this season. "We want to push the future of the Troopers forward and also respect the past."

The musical thread for the show is "The Old Church," by Stephen Paulus, which corps director Fred Morris has described as conveying the feeling of sitting alone in the back row of a small country church.

Troopers enter DCI Championships

The Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps begins Drum Corps International World Championship competition at 5:14 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts.

The preliminary round has a new format and is now a daylong event, beginning at 7 a.m. and featuring all 23 World Class corps, as well as Open Class and International corps. From all corps competing today, the top 25 will advance to Friday’s semifinal round. The top 12 in the semifinal round move to Saturday’s Finals.

Achieving a spot in Saturday’s finals is a goal the Troopers have had for an entire year. The Troopers last made Finals in 2009 after a drought of 23 years.

While in Indianapolis, the Troopers are staying at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds in Lebanon, Ind., about 20 miles north of the city. They rehearse at Zionsville High School.

The Troopers show is “The Road Home,” and features music from American composer Aaron Copland, among others.

There are seven Troopers from Wyoming this season: Aidan Ritchie and John-Michael Villeneuve of Laramie, Shane Spencer of Casper and Vince Zakis, David Zamora, Michael Broyles and Alyson Downs of Cheyenne.

The Troopers season will officially conclude with a Sunday morning brunch at the Crowne Plaza in Indianapolis, where awards will be presented and the drum major’s sword will be passed from Josh Jensen, who ages out, to Kyle Whatley of Fruitland, Idaho, the 2012 drum major.

Rosemont-based corps is 3rd going into DCI championships in Indianapolis

It all comes down to this weekend for the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps, sponsored by the village of Rosemont.

After a competition season that included 35 shows and an 11,000-mile summer tour, all roads now lead to the Drum Corps International Championships opening Thursday in Indianapolis.

The Cavaliers have won the world title seven times and placed second in 2010, with fewer than 10 points separating the top 10 finishers.

Going into the finals inside Lucas Oil Stadium, the Cavaliers are seeded third, behind The Cadets of Bergen County, N.J., and the 2010 champions, the Blue Devils of Concord, Calif.

“Our spirits are higher than ever,” said trumpeter Thomas Druebner of Mount Prospect, a 2011 Prospect High School graduate. “This is one of the hardest shows we’ve ever done, but what makes it easy is that it’s so much fun.”

They call their original program “XtraordinarY” for its intense musical movements, but especially for its Cirque-du-Soleil type choreography.

“This program has them doing things that have never been done before in the drum and bugle corps industry,” said Craig Rasin of Downers Grove, a Cavaliers board member.

He points to one sequence where the tenor drummers are suspended upside down — held up by the contrabass players — as they play, followed by the some of the trumpet players being suspended while playing their horns.

“Sadly, I’m not one of them,” Druebner said. “There was a height and weight requirement, and I was too tall.”

The entire program is culturally diverse, as if different languages are being spoken. In one part, the drill team performs on stilts.

Musically, there is “Footprints” by Wayne Shorter, “Jungle Tango” by Jazz Mandolin Project and “Nature Boy” by Eden Ahbez, which is an underlying current throughout the show.

The Cavaliers are in third place, but “a lot can happen when you have a competition three nights in a row at the same arena,” Rasin said. “We’ve been within a point of the top two teams for the last two weeks.”

The finals are Saturday night.

The Cavaliers are the only remaining all-male corps among the top 10 contenders. Its 150 members include 20 from Chicago’s suburbs and others from all over the world, including Ecuador, Belgium, Japan and Canada.

Tata Steel net profit rises to Rs 5346 cr on one-time gain Best time to be born in India KV Kamath 3rd Test It's time for India's redemption

Best time to be born in India: KV Kamath

The heat and dust over corruption scandals might give some people the impression that the country is going through one of its darkest phases. But for the eternal optimist, Kundapur Vaman Kamath, there has never been a better time to be born an Indian. "I had never imagined that we would have transformed as far and as fast as we have today," says Kamath.

Indeed, India at 64 is very different from India at birth. And Kamath, who was born the same year, has experienced it all - the nation-building fervour of the 1950s and 60s, the disappointments and lost opportunities of the 80s, the confidence of the post-reforms era... "The economic development in the last decade was at an unmatched pace," he says. "But improvement in the next decade will be at a greater pace than before and would bring great prosperity."

Growing up in quiet, coastal Mangalore, young Kamath got a feel of the momentous events of the time because of his father, a Congressman who later became mayor of Mangalore. Among the his earliest memories was the "great admiration" people had for national leaders in those days. Kamath studied in St Ann's and St Aloysius, which gave him early exposure to the English language. While studying at Karnataka Regional Engineering College, he got to try his hand at business too. With his father busy in politics, Kamath began to look after his factory where they made 'Mangalore tiles' (roof tiles baked from clay).

After completing engineering, Kamath studied at IIM, Ahmedabad and chose banking as a career. His stint in the Asian Development Bank in Philippines, which took him across Asia's tiger economies, made him realize how opportunity was passing India by. "Things were getting more difficult (in India) which is why I decided to stay back," he says. He returned to India and took over as ICICI Bank's CEO in 1996.

Kamath wasted no time in converting the institution into a bank, making it the country's second largest. He was the only banker who saw the demand for new-generation banking services from the great Indian middle class and expanded retail loans and services - which included ATMs and internet banking - across the country in a manner that is now part of modern banking history.

The only challenges he sees for India in the next decade are keeping wages competitive and having a resilient, stable currency. What about the challenges of governance? Kamath says that what is happening now is evidence of democratic institutions being at work, with courts taking a hard stance and the office of the CAG talking tough. He is confident that the structural change started in India has gained a momentum of its own.

Tata Steel net profit rises to Rs 5,346 cr on one-time gain

Tata Steel on Friday reported nearly threefold jump in consolidated net profit at Rs 5,346.55 crore for the quarter ended June, buoyed by mainly one-time gain after sale of stakes in Australian mining firm Riversdale and Tata Refractories.

The company had reported a net profit of Rs 1,825.3 crore during the corresponding quarter of last financial year. Other income formed a major part of this profit push, which stood at Rs 3,882.3 crore versus Rs 59.3 last year. The total income for the group during the quarter stood at Rs 33,000 crore as against Rs 27,193.7 crore in the corresponding period last year, up by 21.4 per cent.

The total expenditure incurred by the group shot up to Rs 29,728 crore as against Rs 23,804.9 crore because of the increase in raw material prices, mainly coking coal.

The company said it consumed raw material worth of Rs 11,227.7 crore in the quarter as against Rs 7,805.5 crore, last year. H M Nerurkar, managing director, said the company managed to post growth in volumes and earnings from India operations despite the signs of slower growth in India. He said high raw material prices and monetary tightening in India remained a cause for concern.

The massive uptick in the other income came on the back of Tata Steel's liquidation of investments in Riversdale of Australia, Tata Refractories Ltd and settlement of arbitration of Teesside Cast Products consortium.

Also, Rs 442.1 crore was added to the other income as the company sold its stake in Tata Refractories Ltd.

Tata Steel now has 26.62 per cent stake in TRL, which is now renamed as TRL Krosaki Refractories Ltd.

The company said, “Other income in the consolidated results includes profit of Rs 2,879.29 crore on disposal of Tata Steel Global Mineral Holding’s investment in Riversdale Mining Ltd. The company continues to hold 35 per cent stake in Riversdale Energy (Mauritius) Ltd."

Also, Rs 442.1 crore was added to the other income as the company sold its stake in Tata Refractories Ltd. Tata Steel now has 26.62 per cent stake in TRL, which is now renamed as TRL Krosaki Refractories Ltd. Cash settlement of Rs 597.7 crore also boosted the other income relating to the arbitration with the Teeside Cast Products (TCP) Consortium.

The group's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) stood at Rs 8,358 crore as against Rs 4,506 crore, the same quarter last year. The Ebitda is inflated by 'one-off gains' of Rs 4,007 crore. The group's India operations, classified as Tata Steel India contributed Rs 3,656 crore to the consolidated Ebitda and Rs 2,219 crore to the profit after tax.

Tata Steel Europe recorded a 41.2 per cent increase in its Ebitda, at Rs 1,907 crore.

The company said that this was possible because of the higher average realisations.

Dr Karl-Ulrich Köhler, MD & CEO Tata Steel Europe said, "European steelmakers also faced the challenge of sharp raw material cost increases, which have largely been maintained into this quarter, despite the uncertain economic outlook."Tata Steel's South-East Asia operations under NatSteel Holdings reported an Ebitda of Rs 32 crore, down from Rs 94 crore because of the decline in scrap and rebar prices. Electricity costs shot up which added to the squeeze.

Run machine Cook hits epic 294 to leave India reeling

Alastair Cook went on and on yesterday. For most of the time he looked as if he would go on some more, all the way until England was once again a green and pleasant land.

Click HERE to view graphic: 'Edgbaston Scoreboard' (115.79kB)

But that might never happen and after he had batted for almost 13 hours he was undone by tiredness and urgency, aware there were a match and series to be won. Six runs short of an epic triple century, he was out. England immediately declared amid a torrent of statistics.

India must have been reeling from them. All too soon, facing a first-innings deficit of 486, they were in deeper trouble. Virender Sehwag, their richly gifted and spectacular opener, was out first ball for the second time in the match. What an unfair game it seemed: one side's opener had made 294, the other's had made a king pair. India avoided further loss but they still have two days to bat and are 451 behind.

Cook's monumental innings was the highest score by an England batsman since 1990 when Graham Gooch made 333, also against India, and the sixth highest in all. But as he trooped off, having chased a wide one which was caught at point, Cook seemed momentarily downcast rather than elated.

England's total of 710 for 7 declared was their third highest and their highest since 1938, when they made 903 for 7 in a timeless Test against Australia. The immense first-innings lead was also their third largest.

There was little that was artistic or creative about Cook's innings but it was a testament to concentration and craftsmanship of the very highest order. In any innings that endures for any length of time, especially one that starts against a new ball and then has to contend with another two, there are bound to be brittle moments. This was not a batting strip of the shirtfront variety but, although Cook might have played and missed a time or two, he did not offer a chance.

He faced 545 balls and struck 33 fours. If there is a criticism it is of the mildest kind. Cook might have tried to accelerate in the afternoon when India had long since wilted (actually, on reflection, they had wilted by about lunchtime at Lord's on the second day of the first Test).

True, the fields were strictly defensive by then with four or four five men lining the boundary, but Cook remained content to accumulate resolutely, intent on doing nothing rash. Nobody expects him to be the Great Entertainer, doing the batting equivalent of singing while dancing on tables, but he might burst into a ditty occasionally. By tea he had faced 179 balls of the third day and added 84 runs. It was perhaps old-fashioned Test cricket by an old-fashioned Test cricketer.

This was the statistical zenith of a remarkable sequence of scores by Cook. A year ago he saved his career at The Oval by making a hundred against Pakistan. Had he not done so, it is perfectly possible that he would have been dropped. Having done so, he has become a run machine and crease occupier par excellence.

During the winter's Ashes series he scored 766 runs, including three hundreds, and batted for 34 hours. Far from sated he has scored another three hundreds this summer in six Test matches so far. He is 26. Any and all England batting records are open to him.

Cook's endeavours all but consumed all others. But what eventually swept India away was his fourth-wicket partnership of 222 with Eoin Morgan, who made his second Test hundred. Morgan was never at his most fluent but it is a blessing of his, as of all outstanding batsmen, that he does not let such matters concern him.

He was dropped for the third time when he was on 95 and his dismissal led to what these days for England amounts to a clatter of wickets. Ravi Bopara, having waited two years for his Test career to be resumed then had to wait two days for a bat.

It was all over in 10 minutes, Bopara leg before propping forward to Amit Mishra. It was out, but if there is a batting god he was being as kind to Bopara as he was to Sehwag later. All the favours were being bestowed elsewhere.

Matt Prior perished in the cause of quick runs – he knows no other way, of course, though he might have been surprised to see India taking a good, running catch – before Cook found in Tim Bresnan the partner who would see him safely through to 300.

It was clear by now that this was England's intention and with so much time left in the match it was eminently reasonable. England were interrupted three times during the day, first for a rain shower and then twice for bad light when the floodlights failed temporarily.

The latter two breaks showed cricket at its daftest. Bad light is now entirely in the province of the umpires. Players cannot appeal for it and are discouraged from engaging in discussion about it. When the meter reaches a certain level the officials seemingly decide that play cannot continue.

Understandably, they were booed when they left the first time. England were 563 for 3; the danger did not seem imminent. Soon enough, without any discernible improvement, the umpires relented.

After tea, Bresnan became expansive, and Cook followed his lead. He recognised that all of England wanted him to reach the landmark but also needed to have India batting for a second time before close of play. He had virtually dashed into the 290s and hardly put a foot wrong when Ishant Sharma propelled a ball from wide of the crease which was well outside off stump. Cook reached for it and saw it spoon in the air towards point where Suresh Raina ran in and held the dipping catch.

Cook was disappointed but it was small fry. Ten minutes later, Gautam Gambhir took three runs off the first ball of Jimmy Anderson's first over. It brought Sehwag on strike. He was lured into following an outswinger which he edged to first slip. Two balls in his comeback Test match, scores of 0 and 0. Now that was disappointment.

Stats Magic: The numbers that matter from the third day

5000:

Despite a forecast for early-morning showers (which duly arrived), 5,000 litres of water were sprinkled on to the Edgbaston outfield overnight to keep the grass green and healthy. It is reckoned that these super-absorbent outfields would need at least three inches of rain in an hour to be overwhelmed.

207:

Rahul Dravid dropped two slip catches during England's first innings – and one of them, when reprieving Eoin Morgan, was an absolute sitter. Surprising? Definitely, since he has held more catches (207) than any other fielder in Test cricket.

9:

The century stand between Alastair Cook and Eoin Morgan was England's ninth three-figure partnership of the series. India had only one before the start of their second innings at Edgbaston.

32,000,000:

The pavilion redevelopment of Edgbaston may have cost £32m but it was still the source of the power cut that caused the floodlights to fail and meant play was suspended because of bad light.

50:

Alastair Cook scored the 50th double century by an England player yesterday. It was also thesecond highest score against India, overtaking Geoff Boycott's infamously slow 246 not out at Headingley in '67.

18:

England have now recorded 18 partnerships of 100 or more this summer, easily surpassing the 15 they accumulated in 2004.

8:

It was the eighth time that England had achieved a first- innings lead of above 400 in Tests.

3rd Test: It's time for India's redemption

It is the proverbial moment of truth for India. In their 18-month reign at the top of the Test cricket, the team has encountered many a crunch moment but none bigger than this one.

The third Test against England, starting here on Wednesday, puts everything — series, ranking, reputation and, of course, pride — at stake. It is the biggest test yet (pun intended) for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and for the collective character of his men.

A 0-2 deficit in a four-match Test series is not a situation of adversity but hopelessness. Trying to overtake England at this stage could be like chasing Sebastian Vettel in an HRT car. The odds, no wonder, are heavily stacked against an Indian win in the third Test and the series overall. In England, they have already started celebrating their rise to the top. Andrew Strauss’s men are being hailed as the best Test team ever.

Dhoni agreed that it has been the toughest tour for his side. “If you consider injuries, fitness, form — everything, there are quite a few things to worry about. It’s difficult to recall (any other) but it’s among the most difficult tour (I’ve been involved in).”

But this adversity is nothing new for Dhoni’s men. They bounced back in South Africa when the chips were down. After losing in the first Test at Centurion, they came back to win the match in Durban to level the series. There are, in fact, cold similarities between Durban 2010 and Birmingham 2011. It is just that the task, this time, is two times more difficult. India, sure, will have to raise the roof.

The team’s journey so far has been in reverse gear so far and they will have to change the gears fast to catch up with the high-flying England. They got the much-needed boost when Virender Sehwag joined the squad. The opener has the ability to drive the team in the 10th gear but the problems for India are more in bowling than in batting. Without Zaheer Khan, the Indian bowling has looked like a listless club attack. Even S Sreesanth, for all his aggression, has done little to protect his reputation.

The conditions in Edgbaston could inspire the team to surprise the hosts. The thin grass layer on the wicket could provide the much-needed elixir for the bowlers. Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar besides Sreesanth may relish the conditions as much as much as the home team bowlers.

Indian batting has not exactly fired in the series so far. Rahul Dravid stood tall like the Wall he is known to be but he has had little support from his colleagues. It is time Sachin Tendulkar joined forces with the likes of Dravid and VVS Laxman. He would do the team immense service if he could achieve the much-awaited 100th century here.

But a lot could depend on Sehwag and the start he provides. “He is a dynamic player, he backs his instincts to play shots, irrespective of what bowler he is facing. He looks at the ball, gives it the treatment it deserves. He is an aggressive opener, who has a big impact on opposition bowlers. He is a very good batsman to have in the side,” the India skipper said.

Anaconda that escaped in Longview gets new home

LONGVIEW, Wash. —

An 8-foot long anaconda that briefly escaped from a Longview home this month has been transferred to a licensed reptile handler.

The snake and two others - a 10-foot Colombian red tail boa constrictor and a 6-foot Burmese python - slipped out of a garage at the home on July 12. By the time authorities arrived the owner had already corralled them.

The Cowlitz County Humane Society let the owner keep the boa constrictor and the python, which are considered less dangerous, after he agreed to get locks and stronger screens for their tanks.

But The Daily News of Longview reports that the anaconda has been transferred to a reptile handler because it's too dangerous to keep in the community. It will eventually be placed in a wildlife refuge or zoo.

Anacondas can grow to more than 25 feet long.

Transportation director Lynch resigns

BOB ZELLAR/Gazette Staff

Lynch

HELENA — State Transportation Director Jim Lynch resigned Thursday, saying he wants time to decide whether to run for governor in 2012 or re-enter the private sector.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer accepted Lynch's resignation and appointed Tim Reardon, the Transportation Department's chief legal counsel, to succeed Lynch for remainder of the administration, which ends in early January 2013. Reardon's salary will remain at his current level of $99,984 a year.

The sudden change took place immediately.

A former Kalispell contractor and one-time state Senate candidate, Lynch had headed the Transportation Department from the start of the Schweitzer administration in January 2005.

Lynch, 57, has been mentioned at times as a possible Democratic candidate for governor in 2012, but he declined to tip his hand Thursday.

So far, state Sen. Larry Jent of Bozeman is the only announced Democrat running for governor, although Attorney General Steve Bullock is expected to jump into the race after Labor Day. Five Republicans are actively campaigning for the office.

"It gives me an opportunity to consider the next paths that lay ahead of me and what I can do either in the private side or the public side to serve the people of Montana," Lynch said an interview. "Those are opportunities that I couldn't explore as MDT director."

Pressed about a potential candidacy for governor, Lynch didn't close the door on that option.

"I've never been able to explore, look at it or discuss it," he said of running for governor. "Now I can look at all paths before me. As a state employee, that question was asked of me a lot. That put state employees in uncomfortable positions."

Lynch said he's most proud of the department's ability to get projects delivered on time and put more money aside for highway and bridge maintenance and repairs, without having to raise the state fuel tax. Department employees deserve a lot of the credit, he said

When he took over as Transportation director, Lynch said the department made about $240 million a year in contractor payments for highway and bridge projects. That spending will increase to $392 million for the fiscal year that began July 1 and reach $402 million in the following year.

In addition, the department put out $215 million in transportation projects with federal stimulus money approved in 2009.

In the meantime, he said, he reduced overtime at the department and trimmed the number of employees to fewer than 2,000, 53 fewer than were there when he became director.

"It was great working with Gov. Schweitzer," he said. "We were able to work together and deliver a great program."

Schweitzer thanked Lynch for his service and commitment to the state.

"I wish him well as he moves back to the private sector," the governor said. "Jim was always one of the first people on the scene to any road incident. He was always willing to lend a hand in our towns and communities with snow removal or gravel roads and was a great advocate for highway safety."

Lynch drew fire from environmental groups and Missoula County commissioners who challenged the department's environmental assessment of Imperial Oil/ExxonMobil's plan to ship massive processing equipment through parts of Montana into Alberta for use in the tar sands fields there.

Last month, District Judge Ray Dayton of Anaconda partially granted a preliminary injunction against the department and company. He found the department erred in approving the Imperial Oil/Exxon Mobil's plan to haul 200 megaloads of processing equipment from Idaho to the Kearl Oil Sands in Alberta via U.S. Highways 12 and 200 and other two-lane roads in Montana, the Associated Press reported then.

Dayton ruled that the Transportation Department had violated the Montana Environmental Policy Act by approving an environmental assessment he deemed insufficient to evaluate the project.

Lynch said that controversy had nothing to do with his decision to resign.

As for Reardon, Schweitzer said, "I am honored to have Tim on the team as director of the Department of Transportation. I have every confidence in his ability and know he will serve the people of Montana well."

Reardon, raised in Anaconda, has been chief legal counsel for the Transportation Department since mid-1994. He previously was appointed state workers' compensation judge by Gov. Ted Schwinden in 1981 and served in that post for more than a decade.

Reardon also previously worked as an attorney in the division of workers' compensation and for the Department of Public Health and Human Services.

He has a bachelor's degree from Carroll College and a juris doctorate from the University of Montana law school.

Premier League Watch Barclays Premier League highlights on Premier League's finally back Manchester United defends it Premier League crown Fan preview

Premier League's finally back

The Barclays Premier League season kicks off Saturday morning live on Fox Soccer, Fox Soccer Plus and across our FOXSoccer.tv, iPhone and iPad apps. (Real-time coverage of every BPL game is exclusively on the @FoxSoccerTrax Twitter feed .)

This season is expected be tight at both ends of the table. Six teams have realistic chances of grasping silverware . Another six look to struggle with the threat of relegation. Loaded with star power and buoyed by another year of incredible transfer spending, the Premiership looks to be a dogfight with few predictable winners and losers.

Manchester United return as de-facto favorites , but even after an $80 million off-season splurge on Ashley Young, David de Gea and Phil Jones, the Red Devils are far from a sure thing. For one, they lost two big veteran names to age as Edwin van der Sar and Paul Scholes retired from the game. For another, United were brutally exposed by Barcelona at Wembley in May as a team good enough to gut out games in England but lacking the midfield control and flair to rule Europe.

Tom Cleverley, returning from last season's loan to Wigan, looks like an immediate force in midfield where Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs are showing wear and tear. Phil Jones could slot in well for the brittle Rio Ferdinand, and Chris Smalling has grown by leaps and bounds to become a potent force at right back. But a major concern for United is the performance of De Gea, a young, talented but inexperienced goalkeeper who will have little room for error. The health of Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez is also a worry - he misses the first few games due to concussion but there are reports that he has an underlying neurological condition.

No one counts United out, but they will be pushed hard by a resurgent trio. Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City all have points to prove and all are under serious pressure to deliver.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is already feeling the heat after his team blew a 2-0 lead in the Community Shield, falling 3-2 to United in the final minute of play. With one of the most expensive squads in the game, City have few excuses and Mancini has no margin of error. The addition of Kun Aguero gives them a potential breakout superstar striker, but City must figure out how to win big games. Too often, City is content to play a congested, defense-first style that is dangerous stuff in the Premier League.

Chelsea have an aging squad but a youthful new manager, Andre Villas-Boas. With him, the Blues have reason to hope . Fernando Torres remains a major bust but the Mourinho-trained gaffer's touch has put the lie to both his age and lack of experience this preseason. The Blues will miss the long-term injured Michael Essien badly, but they get Yossi Benayoun back and added the promising Oriol Romeu. Daniel Sturridge will reinforce a sometimes feckless strike corps.

Most intriguing has to be Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool. With the club diving for the depths last season under manager Roy Hodgson, Dalglish pulled off one of the greatest reclamation acts in the game, steering the club to a 6th place finish and almost totally overhauling the club in the process. New boys Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing are expected to step right into the mix from day one, taking pressure off the slowly-recovering Steven Gerrard (groin) and giving the Reds enviable depth. With Luis Suarez, Dirk Kuyt and Andy Carroll forming what is arguably the deadliest strike force in the league, Liverpool will be the team to watch .

On the outside looking in are Arsenal and Tottenham, two teams with thin squads and outsized ambitions.

Tottenham overachieved last season and have to avoid a slump . They will once again play in Europe - this time in the booby-prize that is the Europa League - and will have to rely on three key players to carry them. Gareth Bale, Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric are simply indispensible to Hotspur. Losing any one of them makes the North Londoners a one-dimensional side. They got some help in keeper Brad Friedel, but strained finances have kept them from truly adding depth where they need it: up top.

The knives are already out at Arsenal, a club that continues to baffle. Their defensive weaknesses are so well-known that it has become comedic short-hand for ineptitude. And yet, the club has chosen to ignore that, signing two attacking players in Gervinho and the promising Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain. This has led to palpable unrest in their locker room, with Samir Nasri refusing to sign a new deal and captain Cesc Fabregas pressing for an exit to boyhood club Barcelona. The Gunners desperately need a commanding goalkeeper and anyone other than Sebastien Squillaci in the center of their defense. As yet, they have neither and look to be a troubled team that will leak a lot of goals .

At the other end of the table, new boys Queen's Park Rangers, Swansea and Norwich City will be under immediate pressure, with the Canaries perhaps the most vulnerable of the trio. Manager Paul Lambert has done an incredible job with Norwich, pulling them up two levels in just two years. However, his squad looks thin and slow for the Premier League game, and while he has grit to spare, his team is going to struggle.

But the new boys will be buoyed by the fact that at least three teams in the Premiership are as bad if not worse. Blackburn are appalling ; Aston Villa are in real decline and Wolverhampton and Wigan look like teams that will be very tough to watch.

Of the quartet, Blackburn are odds-on faves to go down right now. They have been brutally mismanaged by new owners Venky's and have a squad that looks close to collapse. Promises of big signings have come and gone and there is a growing sense that manager Steve Kean is not qualified for this task. Rovers could be out of the running by December.

Villa are the more troubling case. They look to be a team that has been shattered by a series of managerial mishaps and setbacks, leading to a squad that isn't performing anywhere close to its potential. New man Ally McLeish doesn't fill observers with confidence, and with good reason: His old club Birmingham City went down twice under his stewardship and often looked miserable while doing so. Villa also lost several key players in the off-season and haven't entirely replaced them; only Shay Given can be said to be comparable to the man he's replacing.

Starting Saturday, Villa and the other 19 clubs in the league start to bring focus to the speculation. The action starts at 10:00 a.m. ET on FOX Soccer when King Kenny Dalglish ushers in Liverpool's season, welcoming Sunderland to Anfield. At 12:30 p.m. ET no FOX Soccer, Arsenal returns to the site of last season's ultimate embarrassment, visiting Newcastle.

On Sunday, last year's dynamic duo - Manchester United and Chelsea - open their seasons in live matches on FOX Soccer, all part an opening match day that sees seven of the Premier League's nine fixtures available on FOX Soccer, FOXSoccer.tv or FOX Soccer Plus.

Manchester United defends its Premier League crown: Fan preview

On Sunday, August 14, the new Barclays Premier League season kicks off for Manchester United when they travel to face West Bromwich Albion. With the team preparing for the match, here are my thoughts on the Red Devils' prospects for defending their league crown:

The squad got younger

It was an active summer for manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United. Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, and Edwin van der Sar all retired, and the team either released or sold players like Owen Hargreaves, Gabriel Obertan, Wes Brown, and John O'Shea. In their places, the Red Devils signed Aston Villa's Ashley Young, Blackburn's Phil Jones, and Atletico Madrid's David de Gea.All three players are young, talented, and immediately fit into Ferguson's plans for the season. With Ferguson beginning a bit of a youth movement at United, I believe he's attempting to both get the squad in order prior to his retirement, and also preparing to challenge FC Barcelona for European dominance. At the least, Jones and Young give the Red Devils some fresh legs to depend on as the season wears on, and de Gea is expected to be the team's number one goalkeeper for the next decade.

Backline and midfield concerns

Even with Jones and Young in the fold for United, I have some concerns about both the backline and the midfield. With Brown and O'Shea at Sunderland, United has lost valuable depth on defense. It's especially concerning given the injuries that defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic struggled with last season. The Red Devils could definitely use some more depth just in case the injury bug strikes again this season, but hopefully the backline remains fairly healthy.

However, I'm deeply concerned about the midfield. One thing Barcelona exposed in the 2011 Champions League Final was United's need for a creative midfielder. It's possible that Wayne Rooney could move back into that role as he did at times last season, but a player like Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder would be perfect for the role. Unfortunately, United has been unable to finish a deal for Sneijder, and now I'm forced to wonder whether or not this deficiency will get exposed again in this year's Champions League. There is some thought that Tom Cleverly could successfully take that role, but we'll see. He's certainly played well in the pre-season.

Still the favorite

Even though there are some concerns on the roster, the Red Devils still improved in the off-season. Ferguson addressed some major holes in line-up, and now has the team prepared to win the league. They should still face challenges from Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool, but United are, by far, the most stable title contender in the league. It's also easy to forget that even though they won the league last year, it definitely wasn't one of United's best all-time squads. This year, they have played much better in the preseason, and with players like Javier Hernandez and Rooney up front, I just don't see how the Red Devils can lose the title this year. They're just too talented for the rest of the league this year.

Derek Ciapala has been a fan of Manchester United since the World Cup in 1994. His favorite Manchester United moment is when they won their 19th English Championship this season.

HNR 8/12: Seidel, Mercier at EPL Final Table; D.C., N.Y. Poker News

Erik Seidel and Jason Mercier headline a stacked final table in the Epic Poker League, and updates on live poker in the D.C. and more casinos in New York. It’s all in today’s PTP Hit and Run.

Epic Poker League plays to final table: There are just six players left in the first EPL $20K main event, which is being held in the Palms in Las Vegas. More here. The players left are good ones: Hasan Habib is the chip leader, and he is joined by Erik Seidel, Chino Rheem, Gavin Smith, Jason Mercier and Huck Seed.

If you’re playing catch up, Card Player has a video from day 3:

Mercier currently leads Bluff’s latest power rankings, which you can see here. We’re guessing his hold on the spot will grow after this tournament. Rheem currently leads the final table in getting called out at 2+2 for scummy behavior; read the thread here.

Daniel Negreanu talks here about why he’s not playing in the EPL — he says it’s because he doesn’t believe the venture will succeed. We’re not sure why that matters that much in playing a poker tournament, which you can either play in or not. The long-term success of the event would seem not to matter that much to Negreanu. We’re guessing his non-involvement has way more to do with his long-running feud with Annie Duke, who is the commissioner of the league.

Girls+poker+cruise=?: We had never heard of Kandykruise before, but now we have thanks to wickedchopspoker. Lots of scantily clad women on a cruise with lots of poker? Sounds like a good time. WCP is sending one of its readers on the cruise; details here. Here’s a video of what the cruise is about:

Online poker slow in Washington D.C.: Like pretty much anything in the nation’s capital, the rollout for regulated online poker in the District of Columbia is getting held up in bureaucracy. Details here; at this point it seems unlikely that anything concrete is going to happen this year, so District residents likely won’t be playing online poker till 2012, if at all.

Terry predicts hardest-ever EPL

London: Chelsea captain John Terry is predicting the most fiercely contested title race in years as the Premier League kicks-off on Saturday after a summer of lavish spending by English football’s elite.

Terry believes defending champions Manchester United remain the team to beat after bolstering their playing staff with the signings of England forward Ashley Young, Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea and Blackburn defender Phil Jones.

But the 30-year-old Stamford Bridge defender believes that half a dozen teams could realistically challenge for the title, pointing to Manchester City and Liverpool’s bold raids in the transfer market.

“I’m worried about a lot of teams this season. Everyone has strengthened,” said Terry at this week’s official launch of the Premier League.

“Manchester City and Manchester United have bought in some good players, Liverpool seemed to have strengthened a lot. There are six or seven teams who can really push and have a chance of winning the trophy.”

Terry is adamant however that Manchester United will represent the biggest hurdle if Chelsea are to reclaim the crown they last won in 2010.

“We can catch Manchester United,” said Terry. “They have been the benchmark for 20 years. We pushed them to the end last season but missed out. We all see their quality and the hunger they have and that the manager has too. It really drives me on and seeing them lift the trophy last year still hurts to this day. I want to get my hands back on it and lift it. The com5petition is improving every year. The players are getting stronger and the managers want it even more.”

Chelsea open their campaign with a potentially awkward away trip to Stoke on Sunday, while Manchester United get their quest for a 20th league title under way against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

Left back Patrice Evra is doubtful for the opener, Ferguson said on Friday. The Frenchman tweaked his knee in last Sunday’s Community Shield when United came from behind to beat neighbours Manchester City 3-2 at Wembley.

“We’ll give him until tomorrow but he is doubtful,” Ferguson told a news conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to West Brom.

One player who will definitely miss out is Mexican striker Javier Hernandez who suffered a concussion during their pre-season tour of the United States.
