PVR Means Persistent Video Recollection running Edmonton movie haunt reaches The End 2011

PVR acquired remaining 40% stake from JPMorgan and India Advantage Fund of PVR Pictures. In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Nitin Sood, CFO of PVR said that they paid a total of Rs 60 crore to complete the buyout. Sood explained that the company's main

Love my PVR. What a concept! What a convenience, now that I have one.

Stopped being an “early adopter” of new technology years ago. The speed of change is so fast that the big dollars for new and improved today will be affordable dollars in a matter of months, maybe a year. Paid $950 dollars for the first front loading Sony Betamax back in the day and that was wholesale. By the time it finally broke down, the latest VHS machine was around $200. Today the DVD player has become disposable. Under $100 dollars for better than decent. It breaks, throw it away and buy another.

The PVR begs answers to several questions.

■Is PVR a verb? PVR-ing. Are you PVR-ing my favourite show?
■How effective are TV commercials anymore?
■If I were a commercial writer/producer, what would I be thinking about?
PVR-ing is a verb. Language adapts and yes I am PVR-ing your favourite show unless trying to capture more than two at a time.

TV commercials might be even more effective. In the pre PVR days, commercial breaks provided that 3-4 minutes to check another channel, hit the fridge, get another cookie, chat about the last segment, play with the dog, anything but pay attention to the commercials. But they got me. Dammit! Fast forward means I have to pay attention in order to hit the play button at just the right time. Fast forward is actually fast. 30 second commercials fly by, no sound, no advertising claims, no bad jingles, no stupid story lines. But hold on! I am remembering words on screen that are there just long enough to be an impression, a logo that is sharp and colourful and well defined. Got me to thinking. Not an original thought I hope. If I were to produce a 30 second tv commercial right now, I would want to make sure the message is strong in fast forward. How many more of these quick messages do you see because you are watching more episodes of more shows.

Get figgy The mystery of a man called Fig Tree John

Savor the Southern sweetness of freshly picked figs or store some to enjoy the goodness year round. Fresh gathered figs are a true sign summer is here.

If you're aren't lucky enough to have a fig tree or have a friend to share their crop, the savory fruit packed with sweetness can often be found at area farmers markets. But don't delay, the fig season is short.

At the first sign of figs ripening on the tree, David Renard of Delcambre is out in his backyard with bucket in hand gathering the nutritious fruit.

"The fig season brings back some good childhood memories. I grew up with grandparents who had fig trees and I would always help with the picking. They were always baking or making preserves with them, so I definitely look forward to fig season," said Renard.

An avid cook, Renard said he always is looking for different recipes calling for fresh ingredients that allow him to use the produce from his garden.

"It just gives me a good, satisfying feeling knowing that I actually grew it myself and provided food for my family," said Renard.

His newest recipe, a Fresh Fig Cake, proved to be a big hit among family and friends.

"I actually compiled the Fresh Fig Cake recipe from several others that I found in old cook books and tweaked it to my own liking," said Renard.

Although the fig season is short, Renard said he takes advantage of the season when figs are at their peak by freezing the sweet fruit for offseason baking.

For freezing, Renard said he places the figs in an open flat container without them sticking together. After they are frozen individually, he places them in zipper lock freezer bags so that when it's time for defrosting the figs do not become mushy or mashed.

"My wife, Beth, and I both enjoy picking the figs and we like to make fig preserves so we can enjoy figs all year round," he said.

Mandy G. Armentor, associate extension agent of the Iberia/Vermilion LSU AgCenter Office, said figs are a good source of energy. A small fresh fig can contain about 32 calories, while a medium fig contains 40 calories. Figs are a good source of iron, B-vitamins, niacin and contain some calcium and minerals.

"Figs are one of the most perishable fresh fruits. They should be picked when fully ripe, handled carefully and used quickly," said Armentor.

Figs can be frozen, with or without sugar, pickled, made into jam, jelly or preserves, canned or even dried for enjoyment year round, she said.

For diabetics or those who have to watch their sugar intake, canned figs can be enjoyed," said Armentor.

"There is no need to worry as figs are one of those fruits that can well without sugar," said Armentor.

Instead of using sugar to make syrup, precook the figs in a little water to make a natural juice. Heating the figs in water will allow some natural sugars to be released. Pack the figs in hot jars, cover with the cooking liquid, and then process using the water bath method, just as is done when preserving figs with sugar.

Zoya Akhtar's Spain odyssey demands just one thing from you: that you slip into adventure mode and then go with the flow.... Rest assured, you're in for a merry ride, with loads of thrills, emotional banter, romance and camaraderie between a host of characters who seem to be having as much fun as you. There seems to be one small little snag however. The first half of the film is low on drama and proceeds as a touristy piece on Spain. It's the second half of the film which emerges as a scintillating insight into friendship, emotional growth and bonding.

www.iitkgp.ac.in Bill for Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur medical school in monsoon session

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) is all set to get the go ahead with its plans to set up a medical school and hospital. According to sources, the Union HRD Ministry will table the amendment Bill to the IIT Act in the monsoon session of Parliament beginning August 1, to facilitate the oldest IIT in the country to teach medicine.

“We have been told by the secretary concerned in the ministry of human resource development that the amendment to the IIT Act facilitating the medical school is part of the list of 20 priority resolutions to be passed in the monsoon session,” said a professor at IIT-KGP on the condition of anonymity.

The institute had signed a $50-million MoU with the University of California, San Diego, in 2009 to set up a 750-bed state-of-the-art hospital and research centre at the campus.

IITs function under the MHRD and are governed by the IIT Act, which prohibits them from foraying into fields like medicine.

Thus far, said the professor, IIT KGP’s application had been pending because of a tussle between MHRD and the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Now, the differences were sorted out . While IIT-KGP will remain under the MHRD, the new curriculum and degree certification will be approved by the MCI. While MHRD officials remained unavailable for comment, the development was confirmed by the administration at IIT-KGP.

“A medical degree, for it to have any value in India, needs the MCI certification. We have answered the concerns that were raised by MCI and are hopeful that the amendment will soon be passed,” said A K Majumdar, deputy director, IIT-KGP.

Ihe oldest IIT in India had started the School of Medical Science & Technology in 2001. IIT-KGP, established in 1951, has more than 9,000 students.

“We are already doing some work in the field of medical science and technology. The earlier school works on a post-graduate level where MBBS doctors train for international research,” said Majumdar.

Also, the institute has been dabbling with telemedicine research for a while and has conducted joint projects with the School of Tropical Medicine and has developed a software providing low bandwidth x-ray.

When, IIT-KGP was set up it was modeled along the lines of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The iconic MIT has managed to effectively expand beyond its core area into fields like philosophy, economics, management and political science.

Mumbai University opened gates to Bollywood after a gap of 18 years for “Ferrari Ki Sawaari” produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra

ferrari ki sawari 200x288 Mumbai University opened its gates to Bollywood after a gap of 18 years for “Ferrari Ki Sawaari”, produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, whose 1994 movie “1942 A Love Story” is said to be the last film to be shot at the heritage building.

According to sources in the production unit of the film, university officials agreed to grant permission to film at the magnificent university building, built in 1857, after thoroughly scrutinising the scene.

The shot, which director Rajesh Mapuskar wanted to can there, involved a sequence of a school children choir.

“It was like a dream come true to get a chance to shoot at the university campus and capturing the true essence of the heritage after so many years,” Mapuskar said in a statement.

The film, about a young boy who wants to play cricket at Lords in England, features Sharman Joshi and Deepika Padukone. Mapuskar says it was a delight working on the sets.

“Sharman was absolutely great and there was lot of positive energy on the sets and everyone was completely focused to do their best,” he added.

If close sources are to be believed, Sharman is travelling to all real locations along with the entire cast and doing his scenes amidst the actual environment. It is thanks to the insistence of Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani that a majority of the film is being shot on original locations
