Mumbai:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given National Anti-Doping Agency’s (NADA) proposal to bring Indian cricketers — both domestic and international — under the testing umbrella the cold shoulder, with a top board official even saying that they don’t recognise the body.

NADA director general Rahul Bhatnagar told The Indian Express that he had sent two letters over the last four months to BCCI chief Shashank Manohar, but was yet to receive a reply.

“We have written two letters to the BCCI, addressed to Shashank Manohar, where we have stated that we want to test players participating in domestic competitions of the BCCI, including the Ranji Trophy. The last letter was sent three weeks ago, and we had approached them initially in the first quarter of this year,” said Bhatnagar.

While Manohar is currently away in England for the Lord’s Test between India and England and couldn’t be contacted, BCCI chief administrator officer, Ratnakar Shetty, refused to comment on the issue.

NEW DELHI: Times have changed for Indian as well as English cricket, and how!

India was a nobody in world cricket when Ajit Wadekar led his team to its maiden series victory over the then unofficial world number one side, England in England in 1971.

Forty years down the line, the tables have completely turned, with Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men heading into the current series as the official numero uno side in world cricket.

Back then, Wadekar's side had a point to prove to the detractors who termed its victory in the preceding series in the West Indies as a flash in the pan.

Now, Dhoni and his men are seeking to reaffirm the tag of being the top Test side in the world.

Call it a coincidence but the two leaders -- Wadekar and Dhoni -- seem to have some similarity in their approach.

While Wadekar appeared to be calm and collected and came across as a person who meant business, Dhoni happens to be more of a gambler with a cool head.

Leading a team to an untamed territory for the first time following the unceremonious exit of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi from captaincy, Wadekar led from the front to help India win their first Test series against a fancied English team, led by Ray Illingworth.

On the other hand, Dhoni's transition to the helm of Test cricket came gradually, with him being first entrusted with the responsibility of leading the side in the shorter format of the game.

Dhoni's record as captain in Tests is impressive but England at home will present him with the ultimate challenge.

Though the Indian captain's list of admirers is as long as Sachin Tendulkar's, Dhoni and his boys have often been labelled as a unit that has not done enough away from home.

"He has got some good leadership skills but one must also remember that a captain is as good as his team. He has done well so far but he has primarily played at home," says former captain Sourav Ganguly.

"He has a good side and it will test him as captain. It is going to be a year which decides how good a captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni really is," insists the left hander.

At the moment, the thing with English cricket is that the measure of their success is only relative to their performance in any recently-concluded Ashes series. It is almost as if the very point of their existence is to put one across Australia, and any other contest is but a preparation.

But in 1971, there was a certain 'ring of truth' about the whole thing.

Led by the shrewd Illingworth, England were truly prospering at that time. They had gotten the better of the West Indies twice in the previous season. Then they had beaten New Zealand and even conquered the Ashes in Australia the previous winter.

With players of the calibre of John Edrich, Geoffery Boycott, Brian Lackhurst, Basil D'Oliviera, Alan Knott, John Snow, Derek Underwood and Peter Lever, they were arguably at their strongest ever, writes Chetan Narula in his book 'Skipper', giving an account of India's greatest captains.

The situation, this time around, is no different as England are still fresh from their Ashes exploits, and boast of a very formidable bowling attack in Chris Tremlett, James Anderson and Greame Swann, besides a strong batting line-up.

"The conditions in England at that time were quite dry, not much rain luckily for we were visiting in the second half of the summer.

"We played seven county games in the run-up to the first Test and won most of them with good margins. It was an immense confidence booster," Wadekar recalls.

The current Indian team, on the other hand, got a lone game against Somerset in their build-up to the high-profile series.

Much like Wadekar, Dhoni also does not believe in playing to the gallery.

"I always impressed on my team the need for playing according to time and not to the balcony. There is little need to please the crowds by playing attacking shots all the time," Wadekar was quoted as saying to the author.

Noted cricket writer Peter Roebuck says Dhoni's leadership seems to be in keeping with the time.

"He gives the feeling of equal treatment to all his fellow cricketers, as if the dressing room is a democracy, yet seems to be in command all the time.

"I feel Dhoni's become a man now, from boyish cricketer that he began as. It seems that he is the true successor to Sourav Ganguly and others have just handled the balanced reigns in between the two of them. It is time for India to take next step in world cricket."

While Dhoni has become an acclaimed leader in a short span of time, success on English soil will certainly put him in a different league.

Leamington Spa, United Kingdom, July 21, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Ninety-nine students from schools across the UK, recently attended a Marine Technology course from the 12th to 15th July at the University of Southampton. The course provided the 13 and 14 year old students with a fun-filled timetable of educational and fun activities to give them a unique insight into the marine industry and the diverse and rewarding careers that it can offer.

The four-day residential programme was generously financially supported by The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust (The LRET). Working alongside facilitators from Babcock Marine and the University’s School of Engineering Sciences, students were set to work on the main hands-on design-and-make project to build their own ship against set criteria and strict specifications such as the ability to carry an amount of weight and to travel at a certain speed. On the final morning students tested their ships in the university swimming pool. Students taking part in the course developed their core life skills in team building, communication, time management, problem solving and presentations.

As part of the course, students were taken on a visit to BAE Systems which gave them an insight into engineering on a commercial scale. They also had the opportunity to take part in a cruise around Southampton’s harbour to demonstrate the importance of marine transportation to the nation and to the prosperity of the region.

The exciting mix of theoretical and practical activities was enjoyed by all the students who showcased their designs and projects to senior representatives from major companies in an exhibition and formal dinner on the final night in a grand finale to the four-day event.

Michael Franklin, Director of The LRET commented, "It is vitally important that we have the right supply and quality of engineering professionals for the future of the UK’s economy. Through courses like this we are able to develop young people’s knowledge and experience of engineering and encourage them to embark on a career in the marine technology sector. The students have shown a great deal of enthusiasm and dedication to their project work, demonstrating to us the importance of a course like this which we are happy to sponsor."

Dr. Andrew Cave, Chief Executive of The Smallpeice Trust said, "Thanks to our sponsor, The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust, we are able to offer students a unique and practical hands-on learning experience. This Marine Technology course enables students to work with industry and academic professionals and discover the vast array of career opportunities in this important industry."

The Marine Technology course is run by independent charity, The Smallpeice Trust, and is part of an on-going programme of residential courses to help young people aged 13 to 18 learn and develop skills in engineering, design, technology and manufacturing. Through running residential courses and STEM enrichment days, The Trust has reached out to 17,677 students across the UK in the past year.

The new course timetable for 2012 will be launched in the autumn school term. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. To find out more, visit www.smallpeicetrust.org.uk, or telephoneThe Smallpeice Trust on 01926 333200.

With more than 600 runs scored in the day, there were bound to be centuries galore and that's what showed by in prominence at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

First India's batting maestro added another feather to his cap by becoming the only batsman to score five centuries in World Cups.

And the way he scored it deserves a standing ovation. Initially, he took his time at the crease, got into the groove and then let loose a flurry of strokes. The end result was a fast-paced ton.

Sitting on 98 at the end of the 24th over Tendulkar hit a four on the first ball of the next over off Tim Bresnan to complete his century which came off 103 balls.

Tendulkar went on to score 120 off 115 ball decorating his innings with 10 fours and five over the fence shots.

Then it was the opposition captain Adnrew Strauss to show his batting prowess. He too completed his century to help England put 338 on board - the same number of runs as India's. The end result - a tied match

Still, the most important part was played by India paceman Zaheer Khan. First he broke Strauss-Ian Bell partnership by scalping Bell and then claimed Strauss as well to bring India back in the game. This in a way was a turning point of the game.

Man-of-the-Match

England captain Andrew Strauss piped India's Sachin Tendulakr for the Man-of-the-Match award.

Not only did he bat superbly under pressure but helped his team sail past a massive 339-run target - the highest successful chase by a team in World Cup history.

India scored 338 but England matched up to it. India's batting maestro Sachin TendulkarScore | Photos scored a fine century but England captain Andrew Strauss too match up to it with an impressive 158 on board.

Lastly England scored the same number of runs that India had put on board - 338 - to tie their World Cup Group B match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday.

The match went down to the last ball of the match even as the spectators jumped off their seat in excitement.

England needed 14 runs to win in the last over and Graeme Swann and Ajmal Shahzad at the crease.

Shahzad scored a six off Munaf Patel and a few singles included and England were just two runs short of the target - 339 with one ball remaining.

As luck would have it the batsman at the crease Swann managed to score just one thanks to impressive bit of fielding in the mid-off region by Yusuf Pathan and their final score read -- 338.

Earlier in the innings, Munaf Patel sent home Kevin Pietersen on 31. He took a fine catch off his own bowling to see him through when the England total was 68.

Post his dismissal a Piyush Chawla googly got the better of Jonathan Trott on 16. England score at the stage was 111/2 in 16.4 overs.

Soon skipper Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell got on to exactly what Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar had done in the first innings -- forge a partnership. They carried on to frustrate the India bowlers even as Strauss completed his century in good time. His 100 came off the 99 balls.

But, Strauss hadn't finished as yet, he went on to put 150 on board and still carried on. Taking cue Bell too batted on to complete his half-century. But, he could not complete his ton as Zaheer Khan got the better of him in the 43rd over.

Bell went for a big heave but failed to clear the boundary as Virat Kohli claimed him at mid-off. He scored 69 and England went down to 281/3. Post his dismissal, the biggest scorer for the day, England captain Andrew Strauss too fell with Zaheer claiming his second victim with an LWB decision. Strauss fell for 158 and England to 281/4.

Zaheer went on to do more damage. With two new batsmen at the crease, he knew that it was the right time to strike and strike he did claiming Paul Collingwood clean bowled on 1. England now were in dire straits with 285/5 on board in the 45th over.

Harbhajan Singh too joined the party with Matt Prior's wicket. He had put just 4 runs on board before Harbhajan saw him off on 289/6 in the 46th over. An over later Munaf Patel got an opportunity to join the celebrations with Michael Yardy's wicket. Then Piyush Chawla cleaned bowled Tim Bresnan in the pen-ultimate over.

Finally, England's final score read 338/8 in 50 overs - the match was tied.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar hit a record fifth World Cup century as India scored an impressive 338.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni elected to bat and the Indian openers Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar got on a rampage against England.

However, Virender Sehwag fell early with Tim Bresnan scalping him in 8th over. A daft shot from Sehwag was taken well by keeper Matt Prior, who leaped towards his right to gather the ball. Sehwag walked back on 35 as India fell to 46/1 in 7.5 overs.

Post Sehwag's dismissal Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir got on with a partnership. Clearly the England bowlers were struggling in the face of Tendulkar and Gambhir's batting prowess.

The two had an answer to almost any delivery that was bowled at them. Cuts, pulls, the unconventional 'upar cut' -- anything and everything was on display at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Finally, offie Graeme Swann managed to break their partnership with his turner that uprooted the off stump of Gautam Gambhir when the score was 180 in the 30th over. Gambhir fell for 51 after a 134-run partnership with Tendulkar.

But, Yuvraj Singh ensured that India's strike rate stayed up as he too went on a rampage with Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar by his side.

And in the 34th over, the much-awaited moment came as Tendulkar hit his 47th ODI ton and his fifth century for at World Cup. He did it in fine fashion scoring a four off Bresnan.

With his century over Tendulkar threw caution to the wind and went on a charge looking to utilise the Powerplay to the maximum advantage. In the process he ended up getting out on a James Andreson ball. A leading edge from his bat was well taken by Michael Yardy. He fell for 120 when the India total was 236 in the 39th over. His 120 came off just 115 balls and included 10 fours and five over the fence shots.

Then India skipper MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh went on a rampage. The two put 69 runs for the third wicket even as Yuvraj Singh completed this 50. Finally he fell to Yardy on 58. On the next ball skipper Dhoni too departed on Bresnan's ball. He scored 31. India were 305/5 at the stage.

At death, the England bowlers tightened the noose even as India, who had posted a 300-plus total were looking to cut loose. As a result quick wickets fell with Bresnan claiming three wicket in an over. In the 49th over, he got rid of Yusuf Pathan, Virat Kohli and Harbhajan Singh to finish with a five wicket haul. And India were all out for 338.
