Napoleon Bonaparte New co-host of 'Deadliest Warrior' will look at warrior behind the weapon Former Navy SEAL Richard “Mack” Renaming the Campaigns

After a year layoff, Spike's cult hit Deadliest Warrior is back with season three, bringing what series co-host Geoff Desmoulin calls "a ton of additions."

Debuting last week with an episode pitting George Washington against Napoleon Bonaparte, the show's seen many changes, both the cosmetic — several new in-show segments illustrating various aspects of the battles — and the major, specifically a new co-host in the form of Richard "Mack" Machowicz, who hosted Discovery's Future Weapons from 2006 to 2008.

Machowicz is replacing former co-host Max Geiger, and with 10 years experience as a Navy SEAL, he's the first permanent member of the cast with a military background.

In a December visit to Deadliest Warrior's Los Angeles set, Machowicz told Newsarama that his past will help viewers gain a greater insight into the mindset of the warriors being featured.

"Hopefully it will increase the takeaway value for the audience member," Machowicz said of his role on the show. "A little more history, a little more functionality of the weapons, a lot more of the warrior behind the weapon. How do they show up? What is their mentality? How do they approach strategy and tactics?"

When talking to the hosts, there seemed to be a much stronger focus on education in all aspects of Deadliest Warrior this season, though given that the show's popularity was forged from simulating bloody battlefield scenes, those involved aren't looking to lecture anyone with boring lessons.

"If there's one attribute that I have that allows me to be successful in doing what I do, I tend to take what people make complicated, and I simplify it," Machowicz said. "If we can make it simple, but effective, clean and concise — and fun — then you have a really 'infotaining' way to look at this stuff, and have a blast with it.

Desmoulin, the show's biomedical scientist, will also be upping the learning factor with a new laboratory sequence, explaining the scientific facts of the weekly matchups in a focused segment.

"Although they've let me talk about science in the past, it was always a bunch of hand-waving," Desmoulin said. "We take the meatiest science portion of the show, and I'm able break it down with diagrams, demonstrations, full-on explanations."

Armand Dorian is the show's medical consultant, and expressed excitment over getting similarly further in-depth for the current season.

"I've been able to start explaining more anatomical features, describing what's happening in the body a little bit more, throw out a little more complex medical conditions than just a straight up 'bullet in the head' kind of thing," Dorian said. "Who's ever been able to evaluate a crush injury from an elephant? Sure, it's going to hurt, sure, it's going to kill, but what actually happens?"

Dave Baker, who fashions the replica weapons used in the show's battle scenes, has made moves to increase historical accuracy.

"Everything on our show has to have a minimum of three, curated sources," Baker said. "Not three articles on Wikipedia. Last year we got in some fan trouble by using some stuff that maybe wasn't as curated as we'd like it to be."

Video game developer Robert Daly has also joined the show, running a simulation program calculating multiple intangibles for each contest. Daly is the studio head of Pipeworks Software, who produced last year's Deadliest Warrior video game.

Desmoulin said the changes were made based on feedback from the first two seasons.

"The format of the show was something that everyone wanted to see," Desmoulin said. "Everyone likes to see history, everyone likes to see science, everyone wants to see these warriors in action, and settle these hypothetical bar bets.

"The second season, we upped the gore factor, and I think we lost some people, the older viewers. That matters when you're talking about advertising dollars."

Yet Desmoulin stressed that the alterations to the show don't change Deadiest Warrior's central appeal — seeing different historical factions throw down in fantasy warfare.

"Anyone who's been watching the show is still going to be entertained because the sizzle is still there, we've just added more meat," he said.

Desmoulin said that many of season three's bouts were directly inspired by fan requests, specifically noting the season premiere and the upcoming clash between Genghis Khan and Hannibal. Later in the season, the show takes a much more modern bent with an installment depicting Saddam Hussein versus Pol Pot.

"We're introducing the idea of evil on the battlefield, and how that actually shows up," Machowicz said of the episode.

Another notable season three skirmish is between vampires and zombies, with 30 Days of Night writer Steve Niles appearing as a guest expert on the side of the vamps, and World War Z author Max Brooks representing the living dead. Spike hosted a panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego last week to promote the episode, which is scheduled to air on Sept. 14.

Deadliest Warrior airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on Spike. Tonight's episode: "Joan of Arc vs. William the Conqueror."

“A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon.”

Those words of wisdom come from Napoleon Bonaparte, who knew a bit about the battlefield himself (that, and big hats). There’s a long military tradition of awarding combat veterans medals and campaign ribbons to commemorate their service, something that has become a staple of the American military, as well. In fact, just last month, the Department of Defense announced additional campaign stars for wear on the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. Campaign stars are military decorations that denote participation in specific parts of a conflict — for these wars, this translates to identifying when a service member deployed overseas.

While scanning over the Defense Department’s press release for these campaign stars, my Orwellian Bone tingled. The phase breakdowns and names of both the Iraq war and Afghanistan war seemed a bit off to me and rather, well, misleading.

What’s that? Not familiar with the Orwellian Bone? It’s right next to the funny bone, but it doesn’t protrude quite as much. I first discovered mine when the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would be called the Department of Homeland Security. Fatherland and Motherland were already taken, or something.

For example, the second phase of the Iraq war, from May 2, 2003, to June 28, 2004, is referred to officially as the “Transition of Iraq.” Post-invasion Iraq was a transition, that much is true — a transition to disorder that included the disbandment of the entire Iraqi Army and mass looting across the country. And in 2004 and 2005? It seems to me there was a lot less “Iraqi Governance” going on than I.E.D. attacks.

As for Afghanistan, late 2006 to late 2009 has been decreed “Consolidation II.” I mean, really — does that terminology mean anything to anyone? What the Pentagon’s campaign description glosses over is that we were too tied up in Iraq to fully focus our efforts on the Taliban, so we tried to call a timeout and the enemy didn’t cooperate. Which was rather rude of them, now that I think about it.

I served in Iraq for 15 months, from late 2007 to early 2009, as a scout platoon leader and a targeting officer. I mainly remember a lot of sand, a lot of chai and the time that AK-47 rounds got close enough to my head to crack instead of whistle. According to official military history, though, these times are known as the “Iraqi Surge” and “Iraqi Sovereignty.” Eternal truth: war hearts irony. Because during my time in the surge, my platoon was chronically undermanned, and during my time in “Iraqi Sovereignty,” I saw mostly dependent Iraqi security force units. Not trying to be derogatory or cynical here; just trying to keep it real.

Anyway, after reading about the new campaign phases, the aforementioned Orwellian Bone tingle in my elbow returned, as disagreeable and absurdist as ever. These were my wars (well, one of them was), and my war hadn’t been quite so impersonal and official-sounding. So I took the liberty of rewriting the phase titles, in an attempt to more accurately capture what actually went down in the Iraqistan. Well, that, and to type the words “To hell with Newspeak.”

Iraq

Phase 1 (March 19, 2003, to May 1, 2003)
DoD Title: Liberation of Iraq
My Title: Lost: W.M.D.’s. Found: Lots of Old Def Leppard Shirts

Phase 2 (May 2, 2003, to June 28, 2004)
DoD Title: Transition of Iraq
My Title: “We Disbanded What?” A Whodunit Mystery

Phase 3 (June 29, 2004, to Dec. 15, 2005)
DoD Title: Iraqi Governance
My Title: The Last Throes of an Insurgency

Phase 4 (Dec. 16, 2005, to Jan. 9, 2007)
DoD Title: National Resolution
My Title: The Last Throes of an Insurgency, Part II

Phase 5 (Jan. 10, 2007, to Dec. 31, 2008)
DoD Title: Iraqi Surge
My Title: Counterinsurgency! It Works!

Phase 6 (Jan. 1, 2009, to Aug. 31, 2010)
DoD Title: Iraqi Sovereignty
My Title: Noncombat Operations (That Still Include Combat)

Phase 7 (Sept. 1, 2010, to present)
DoD Title: New Dawn
My Title: Another Day, Another Dollar

Afghanistan

Phase 1 (Sept. 11, 2001, to Nov. 30, 2001)
DoD Title: Liberation of Afghanistan
My Title: Operation American Fury

Phase 2 (Dec. 1, 2001, to Sept. 30, 2006)
DoD Title: Consolidation I
My Title: The Five-Year Tora Bora Facepalm

Phase 3 (Oct. 1, 2006, to Nov. 30, 2009)
DoD Title: Consolidation II
My Title: We Really Should’ve Read Up on the Soviet War in Afghanistan

Phase 4 (Dec. 1, 2009, to present)
DoD Title: Consolidation III
My Title: Counterinsurgency! It Doesn’t Work! (But Who Cares, Bin Laden’s Dead!)

So, there it is, Department of Defense: a list of suitable replacement phase titles to better reflect the highs and lows of these savage little wars of ours. It’s certainly not comprehensive, but hey — it’s a start. I humbly request that all royalty proceeds these earn be donated to medical science, for a study of why so many Americans can’t find their Orwellian Bone.

Since I opened this piece with a quote by a Frenchman (eh, Corsican, close enough), I’m going to finish it with one, as well. “War is too serious a matter,” Georges Clemenceau famously quipped, “to entrust to the generals.” (The fact that, contrary to popular attribution, he may have said “military men” rather than “generals” will be purposefully overlooked in the pursuit of greater profundity.) That statement, laced with so much ironic disdain, would seem to seek to extend its wisdom to Pentagon spin doctors in these modern times.

The power of language isn’t just a writer thing or an Orwell thing. It’s a human thing. Words already struggle mightily to capture the horrors, moral ambiguities and ethical black holes of war. But all too often, words are all we have to offer the ages, in order to prove we were here and we experienced and we learned. Let’s prove we learned something from the past decade of war. Let’s write what we mean and mean what we write, for the sake of oldspeak.

Item girl Rakhi Sawant will host a chat show Gajab Desh Ki Ajab Kahaaniyaan on Imagine TV

MUMBAI: Rakhi Sawant was at her motormouth best in Delhi. And some brave guy apparently stole her sari!

Meri sari chori ho gayi. Aap hi batao main kya karti?" That's what Rakhi Sawant asked the press at the launch of her upcoming reality show, Gajab Desh Ki Ajab Kahaaniyaan".

The event was slated to start at 3pm on Tuesday in Delhi, but got delayed by two hours. Only when a few mediapersons walked out that the event started. "Main bahut maafi chahti hoon ki thoda late ho gayi," Rakhi said, to which the press retorted, "Do ghante ho gaye. Yeh kya thoda late hai?" After a brief pause, Rakhi tried to placate them as she said, "Aap jaan hi lelo meri. I don't want to cry here, but you won't believe that this press conference got delayed because my sari got stolen. Mere saath yeh tragedy ho gayi. You might think this is a publicity gimmick, but trust me, this is what has happened." On being asked why she couldn't wear something else, she replied, "Aise kaise kuch bhi pehen ke aa jati? Why didn't you send me your shirt?" came her rejoinder. "You won't believe it, I even asked the channel representatives to let me attend the press conference in my gown. I didn't want to keep my friends waiting." But the press was in no mood to forgive her and continued to ask her a string of weird questions such as "Do you think Abhishek Awasthi got this done?" "Will you be getting an FIR lodged?" to annoy her.

Rakhi also rebuked Delhi designers for charging her about `1.5 lakh for the sari she finally wore, which she said they would have offered to any Bollywood A-lister without charging a single penny. "Just because Rakhi Sawant wanted a sari, they had to charge over a lakh. Isn't this bizarre? I mean, Delhi designers have been blackmailing me. Had Kareena or Katrina been in a similar situation, they would not have had to pay anything," Rakhi retorted.

Rakhi, who had recently declared her desire to tie the knot with Rahul Gandhi, shocked everyone by shifting her allegiance to Baba Ramdev. "Mujhe nahin lagta Soniaji ke saath meri daal galegi. So I wouldn't mind marrying Swami Ramdev. He has loads of money and drives expensive cars. If this wedding happens, you all will get to see a glamorous sadhvi. Wouldn't that be interesting?" Rakhi refused to address the yoga guru as 'Baba', because "Baba toh aap logon ke liye hain. Mere liye toh woh Swami hi hain. I hope he doesn't call me 'behen'. If Imagine TV plans to do another "Swayamvar" for me, they'll have to get Swami Ramdev on the show. In fact, I'll try my best to get him on it."

When asked why Ramdev, Rakhi explained, "I find him hot. He is sexy. Haven't you ever seen his flat tummy? Bas ek baar shaadi ki mala unpe daal doon, unki aankh fadakna bhi band ho jayegi. And I can vouch for the fact that the yoga DVD which we will release will be far more sensuous and hot than Shilpa's. It will find several takers." Rakhi may be planning to meet Baba... err, Swami Ramdev, but she doesn't think she can do much to help him in the current situation he is in. "I'm just a bit scared of the cops, who might bash me up just as they bashed his followers. Lekin agar pyaar kiya toh danda kya?"

But how come she isn't considering anyone from Bollywood for the next season of "Swayamvar", if that ever happens? "I'm not interested in Bollywood." Not even in Salman Khan?? "Unka toh bina shaadi kiye hi sab chal raha hai. He has several girlfriends. Mere liye Baba hi hain."

With such whacky replies, Rakhi ensured that her "media friends" were entertained and didn't harbour any hard feelings for her by the end. Rakhi ka jaadu chal gaya!

Indian Foreign Minister SM Krishna shakes hand with his Pakistani counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar before talks in New Delhi

Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna, left, shakes hand with his Pakistani counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar before talks in New Delhi, India.

NEW DELHI: The foreign ministers of India and Pakistan revived the pursuit of an ‘uninterruptible’ dialogue process on Wednesday though both sides were aware of a nagging hurdle — their wavering trust.

“This is indeed a new era of bilateral cooperation between the two countries,” Pakistan’s Hina Rabbani Khar told India’s S.M. Krishna in a brief meeting with the media after their talks.

Ms Khar said she believed “that it is the desire and commitment of both the governments to make it an uninterrupted and uninterruptible process…There is no alternative to dialogue and to constructive engagement”.

Mr Krishna said he was satisfied at the progress in this round of the resumed dialogue.

“The outcomes have been as per our expectations. Above all, we have reaffirmed our commitment to resolve all outstanding issues through a comprehensive, serious and sustained dialogue,” Mr Krishna said.

“While being fully cognisant of the challenges that lie ahead, I can confidently say that our relations are on the right track. We have some distance to travel, but with an open mind and a constructive approach, which has been demonstrated in this round of dialogue, I am sure we can reach our desired destination of having a friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries.”

Both countries had previously agreed to see their peace process as irreversible but hopes were belied after a spate of terror attacks. They had agreed to de-link the problem of terrorism with the continuation of their dialogue but again their leaders had to row back.

A joint statement said the two had agreed that terrorism posed a continuing threat to peace and security and reiterated their “firm and undiluted commitment” to fight and eliminate the scourge in all its forms and manifestations.

“We have also agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation on counter-terrorism to bring those responsible for terror crimes to justice,” Mr Krishna added.

He said on the Jammu and Kashmir issue, “we will continue discussions with a view to finding a peaceful solution by narrowing divergences and building convergences.

Meanwhile, for the welfare of the people on both sides of the LoC, we have announced additional measures on cross-LoC travel and trade”.

“The ministers affirmed the importance of carrying forward the dialogue process with a view to resolving peacefully all outstanding issues through constructive and result-oriented engagement, and to establish friendly, cooperative and good neighbourly relations between Pakistan and India,” the joint statement said.

Civic Census Results Book and additional tables are available online population has reached 1,090,936

http://img.thezimbabwean.co.uk/310_92_StatsSAnewlogo.jpgThis will be the third census in democratic South Africa and the exercise will continue until October 31. Apart from being a part of the 2010 round of African censuses whose aim it is to provide comprehensive data for improved planning and to aid developmental initiatives on the continent; the undertaking of a census informs government’s planning frameworks and advances the ethos of evidence based decision-making e.g. with respect to distribution and allocation of government funds at all tiers of government for delivery of basic services, measuring and monitoring the impact of government policies and programmes thus enabling prioritization of resources based on need e.g. location of a school or clinic.

Private sector organisations also use census data for business planning and market related purposes. It’s evident and beyond any shadow of doubt that the subsequent gains of such an exercise are vital and immense even to the ordinary man in the street; yet in other spheres of the society, the motive and process of such an exercise are often unknown, overlooked or worse still misrepresented and misunderstood resulting in people circumventing the exercise. I will address a few of such misconceptions here.

Everyone counts

Everyone inside of the country counts irrespective of legality of status. Census is conducted by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), a body of highly skilled and competent professionals who apart from retaining and processing all information collected; adhere to a code of conduct prohibitive of divulging personal details.

Census 2011 is neither meant to “flush out” those who failed to secure general work permits nor is it meant to note whether or not one is in the country legally. To be counted (or enumerated as we call it); one need not necessarily be a South African citizen or to possess a valid SA id document no, for as long as one is inside the country, they must be enumerated.

Census 2011 is not only for those in towns and suburbs but for all, including farmers and farm labourers, those in institutions, the homeless etc. So if for instance one is a domestic worker, the census is not just for the landlord and/or landlady and their family; hence the domestic worker must also actively ensure interaction with the enumerator.

If you live in a secluded place or high walled area, it is imperative that you make prior arrangements to be enumerated.

For your safety

Census enumerators (i.e. those who will be visiting your homes to count) will wear distinctive “Census 2011” regalia which will soon be advertised nationally and will carry identification cards which will display their names and contact (toll-free) numbers should you wish to crosscheck and of course, all this is meant for your safety and ensuring that no imposters deceive respondents.

The enumeration process is more than just a head count as the questionnaire will have different sections to be completed but should not however take too long.

Remember, enumerators will not be there to allocate resources such as a RDP houses / stands or asylum papers etc. Once a household has been enumerated, a sticker will be placed to mark that household as enumerated to avoid duplication, it’s not meant to identify any household as target for xenophobic or other ultra motives, no.

Allow for that sticker to remain once it has been pasted. Lastly, much as our conscience bears witness when we have done right, so should we all yearn to be counted and ensure so this October – Census 2011 is here, you count.
2011 Civic Census numbers released The 2011 Civic Census reports that Calgary’s population has reached 1,090,936, which is an increase of almost 20,000 people from the April of 2010 report.

The volume of population growth, with is 1.81%, is similar to what the city experienced in 2001 AND 2003. “Good, accurate data like that included in the Calgary Civic Census is the basis for smart decision-making about the future of our community,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “City management, my City Council colleagues, and I will use the information in this report to help guide us toward creating the better Calgary we all seek.”

One area of the city is continuing to lead the way in growth. Panorama Hills has seen an increase in the last year of almost 2,000 residents while four other communities saw more than 1,000 new people move into the area. The communities with growth over 1,000 people are Panorama Hills in the northwest, Auburn Bay, New Brighton, Cranston in the southeast and Skyview Ranch, located in the northeast quadrant of the city. Four communities grew by 100% or more in the last year. They are Mahogany, a southeast community, which saw a population bump by 205%, or 530 residents. Walden, also in the southeast grew by 183%, or 384 residents. Skyview Ranch, a new community in the northeast saw an increase in 154% or 1093 new residents and Sage Hill, a community in the northwest grew by 102%, or an increase of 718 residents. “After a pattern of population decline in many established neighbourhoods over many years, it’s a good sign that many of these communities have experienced recent population growth,” said Mayor Nenshi. “If we can maintain this trend through smart policies and investments, the result will be more sustainable, vibrant, and healthy communities that Calgarians want.”

As far as net migration, which is the difference between the number of people moving into Calgary and the number moving away, almost 10,000 more people moved to Calgary than moved away. This is a significant change in the city because in 2010, the city experienced a negative net migration which saw over 4,000 people move away from Calgary than to Calgary.

The next statistic concerns housing. The number of housing units, both existing and under construction, increased to 450,952 up from 445,455. This is an increase of almost 5,500 from April 2010. The number of vacant dwelling units in Calgary decreased in 2011. The overall vacancy rate in the city is 3.69%, down from 3.93% in April 2010. There are now 422,290 occupied dwellings. Of this number, 296,020 or just over 70% are owner-occupied. In 2010, the comparable percentage was 70.65%.

If you’re looking for a mate, the numbers add up better for single women in Calgary. The total number of men slightly exceeds the number of women in the city. There are about 4,000 more men in Calgary than women.

The Civic Census Results Book and additional tables are available online at www.calgary.ca/census.

About SCI

sci ho small
The Shipping Corporation of India was established on October 2nd, 1961, by the amalgamation of Eastern Shipping Corporation and Western Shipping Corporation.

Starting out as a marginal Liner shipping Company with just 19 vessels, the SCI has today evolved into the largest Indian shipping Company. The SCI also has substantial interests in various segments of the shipping trade. SCI’s owned fleet includes Bulk carriers, Crude oil tankers, Product tankers, Container vessels, Passenger-cum-Cargo vessels, Phosphoric Acid / Chemical carriers, LPG / Ammonia carriers and Offshore Supply Vessels. Sailing through for nearly five decades, the SCI today has a significant presence on the global maritime map.

As the country’s premier shipping line, the SCI owns and operates around one-third of the Indian tonnage, and has operating interests in practically all areas of the shipping business; servicing both national and international trades.

In view of the demand from Indian trade, the SCI has diversified into a large number of areas. The SCI is today the only Indian shipping Company operating: break-bulk services, international container services, liquid/dry bulk services, offshore services, passenger services. In addition, the SCI mans and manages a large number of vessels on behalf of various government departments and organizations.

The SCI has immensely contributed to the growth of India’s EXIM trade and the national exchequer, by being a net earner/saver of valuable foreign exchange.

Over the years, SCI has been a lifeline for the country in times of emergency and distress, by ensuring continued and uninterrupted supply of crude oil, which drives the country’s economy.

Liberalization and globalization of the Indian economy has presented the SCI with a suite of growth and diversification opportunities. The SCI’s growth has been additionally spurred on by the presence of a modern, young and diversified fleet, operated by a large pool of well trained and experienced manpower, both onshore and at sail.

As a profitable commercial venture of the Government of India, the SCI has an excellent track record of profitability since its inception. The SCI’s annual performance has consecutively been rated excellent for a record 18 times, under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Government of India.

The Government of India has conferred “Navratna” status to SCI on 01.08.2008 - enhanced autonomy and delegation of powers to the Company towards capital expenditure, formation of Joint Ventures, mergers, etc.

Continued profitability of the SCI is been due to a slew of innovative and timely strategies and measures adopted by the SCI management. Amongst these include, inter alia, judicious and optimal utilization of available tonnage, by deploying it in the most remunerative sectors; commencement of new services in niche markets; identification and expeditious disposal of value destroyers or non-performing assets; forging alliances with leading market players to enhance cargo; availability and apportioning of expenses; and administrative cost cutting.

The SCI takes pride in being a responsible and socially committed owner, placing greater emphasis on the safety of life, vessels, cargo and the environment it operates in. Today, the SCI has evolved into a highly quality and safety conscious organization.

Not surprisingly, the SCI has received numerous awards and accolades from various national and international organizations for excellence in customer satisfaction, operational efficiencies, human resource training and emergency preparedness.

In tune with the global trend for specialization and the premium placed on core competencies, the SCI has charted a definitive course of action for the future. Thrust areas for growth and diversification focus on energy transportation, including a sunrise segment like transportation of LNG and containers. The SCI forays into new thrust areas could either take the form of direct capital investment or by forging strategic and symbiotic alliances with significant market players in the market.

The SCI has heralded India’s entry into the specialized field of LNG transportation, by acquiring a stake in the two Indian LNG transportation agreements contracted till date, after a global bidding process. SCI is the only Indian shipping company engaged in transportation of LNG, a vital fuel for India’s power plant and chemical / petrochemical industry. For the same purpose, SCI has formed three Joint Ventures with one vessel each. On two of these LNG vessels, SCI is managing onboard operation and technical management and the remaining vessesl is fully manned by SCI.

The SCI possesses all the ingredients essential for emerging as a truly world class international shipping Company. The endeavour of the management is to facilitate the release of boundless energy and initiative streams, which will be channelled for the growth and prosperity of the Company and the nation.

Under burden of a damaging 10,000 pages report against Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) went into a huddle on Wednesday to decide his fate and plan future course of action in the matter.

The party, which had scheduled a meeting at senior leader LK Advani's residence to plan out its floor management and set agenda for the forthcoming Parliament session instead discussed Yeddyurappa's fate for a larger part of time.

A section of the BJP leadership strongly believed Yeddyurappa should be removed to strengthen party's position in the Parliament where BJP plans to shout hoarse on corruption.

Some other BJP leaders expressed a lot of bargaining needed to be done and the party should wait and watch. On Wednesday evening, a defiant Yeddyurappa took a chartered flight to Delhi to meet the BJP leadership to explain his position and discuss his political future.

It was an hour of reckoning for Yeddyurappa and BJP yielding to caste pressure from Karnataka to let him continue. On Lokayukta report even though BJP tried to put in a brave face saying it cannot be compelled to take action against Yeddyurappa on technical grounds, party sources said it was important for the party to come clean and show zero tolerance on the issue of corruption.

More so since the UP elections are round the corner where the party is ranting over corruption under chief minister Mayawati's regime, and the Parliament session about to begin, Yeddyurappa’s presence in CM’s office can weaken BJP’s attack.

The Congress alleged the entire BJP leadership of indulging in corruption when Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said BJP leadership may be the beneficiaries of illegal mining.

“There are media reports that BJP leader Sushma Swaraj made Reddy brothers mining ministers. While she has officially said that they became ministers when Arun Jaitley was in-charge. This shows that the whole national leadership of the BJP is hands-in-glove in the illegal mining,” Ahmad said.

Congress is claiming that while it has been prompt in sacking Ashok Chavan, Shashi Tharoor, Suresh Kalmadi even before charges could be proved against them, BJP is dragging its feet on Yeddyurappa.

Despite having survived several challenges from within the party Yeddyurappa, over the last few months, managed to keep dissidents at bay in a way that the BJP central office had to support him. But it was almost certain that he will go this time. Party sourcses said it was unlikely that Yeddyurappa may get a sympathetic hearing from the high command this time.

BJP sources that party president Nitin Gadakari;s meeting with Yeddyurappa on his return from England was indicative of the fact that BJP was treating the matter seriously.

BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad clarified saying, : “Illegal mining is wrong. There is no doubt about it. The party will take a judicious decision that is expected of us.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Wednesday that it would take a call on Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa continuing in office after going through the "voluminous report" of the Lokayukta on illegal mining.

As speculation intensified on whether Yeddyurappa, the BJP's first chief minister in the country's south, would remain in office, party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said: "It will take some time to gothrough the voluminous report. After that we can take some decision."

The report names the chief minister amongst others as being responsible for illegal mining and resultant land scams.

According to a highly placed party source, action is likely against Yeddyurappa after the report is tabled.

However, the nature of the action was yet to be decided as the party had to take a call between its first government in south India and its position in New Delhi.

"If he is indicted in the report then action might be taken, it depends on what he is being held guilty of," a party insider told IANS, admitting that Yeddyurappa had backing inKarnataka but a decision would have repercussions on the anti-corruption stance of the party in New Delhi.

"An action taken report is supposed to be filed in the report within three months. That will be done depending on what the report says, but it is not final what action will be taken," another senior leader said.

About the University

The University of Mysore is among the foremost institutions of its kind, and is an enduring symbol in the sphere of higher education in India. It was founded by the then Maharaja of Mysore, His Highness Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his Dewan, the renowned engineer - statesman, Sir M.Visvesvaraya, on July 27, 1916. The Maharaja of Mysore became its first Chancellor. A Bill to establish and incorporate the University was introduced in Mysore Legislative Council in 1916. It was passed unanimously on 17th July 1916. The first meeting of the University Council was held on 12th August 1916 and the first meeting of the Senate on 12th October 1916.

The University of Mysore became the first University outside the domain of the English administration in India, the sixth University in India as a whole, and the first ever University in Karnataka. During the institution of the University in 1916, four faculties were constituted viz., Arts, Science, Engineering and Technology, and Medicine. Seperate Boards of Studies and Boards of Examiners were constituted in 28 subjects. The University was also administering 12 other educational institutions.

The first Act of the University came in the year 1933 (University of Mysore Act 1933). The first report of the curriculum followed by different departments is available in the University's Calendar 1947-48. The University offered a two-year intermediate Course, three year B.A.(Hons), B.Sc.,(Hons) Degree Courses and M.A., M.Sc., Courses. There were also the faculties of Medicine and Engineering. The University also offered Diplomas in vocational subjects. The University Extension Lectures and Publication Bureau were notable features of the University.

The main campus of the University, created in 1960, lies in a picturesque area of 739 acres at the western end of the Kukkarahalli Lake. The University headquarters, the Crawford Hall, is located right across the lake on the eastern end. This inspiring locale of the campus was aptly named Manasagangotri (Fountainhead of the Ganges of the Mind) by the poet-laureate, Dr. K.V.Puttappa (Kuvempu). In due course, two satellite campuses were set up in response to the demands of post graduate education from semi-urban/rural areas: Sir M.Visvesvaraya Post Graduate Centre at Tubinakere in Mandya, and the Mysore University Post graduate Centre at Hemagangotri in Hassan.

In the beginning, the entire Princely State of Mysore comprising of nine districts came under the jurisdiction of the University. Now it is confined to Mysore, Mandya, Hassan, and Chamarajanagar districts. The remaining areas come under the Bangalore University (1964), Mangalore University (1980), and Kuvempu University (1987). The institution, incidentally, gave birth to one more University in 1996 when the Institute for Correspondence Courses and Continuing Education in the Manasagangotri campus, got transformed into the Karnataka State Open University.

The University now encompasses 122 affiliated colleges and 5 Constituent Colleges (with an aggregate of 53,000 students). In addition, the University has 37 post graduate departments, 8 specialised research & training centres and 2 post graduate centres that together offer about 55 regular academic programmes to 3,500 students. It also runs a number of employment-oriented diploma courses and certificate programmes. The post graduate departments are reputed for excellence in advanced studies and research, and have attracted projects and grants worth crores of rupees from many national and international institutions.

The University has developed excellent infrastructure for curricular and co-curricular activities. The Mysore University Library offers a collection of over 8 lakh books, 2,400 journal titles and 1 lakh volumes of journals. The main campus features an amphitheatre, an auditorium, a swimming pool, and hostels for women and men with modern amenities and comforts.

The University has established a rapport with many well-known and prestigious universities and institutions abroad for academic, technical and cultural exchange.

Having served the cause of higher education and research with distinction and dedication for almost the whole of the 20th century, the University of Mysore now envisages the 21st century as an era of even greater growth and success during which it will produce well-qualified and well-motivated youth to serve humanity as teachers, administrators, doctors, engineers, scientists, lawyers, social workers and in various other fields. As it gets closer to its centenary celebrations, the University looks forward to newer ways of fulfilling the vision of its Founding Fathers.
