University of Mysore

About the University

The University of Mysore is among the foremost institutions of its kind, and is an enduring symbol in the sphere of higher education in India. It was founded by the then Maharaja of Mysore, His Highness Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his Dewan, the renowned engineer - statesman, Sir M.Visvesvaraya, on July 27, 1916. The Maharaja of Mysore became its first Chancellor. A Bill to establish and incorporate the University was introduced in Mysore Legislative Council in 1916. It was passed unanimously on 17th July 1916. The first meeting of the University Council was held on 12th August 1916 and the first meeting of the Senate on 12th October 1916.

The University of Mysore became the first University outside the domain of the English administration in India, the sixth University in India as a whole, and the first ever University in Karnataka. During the institution of the University in 1916, four faculties were constituted viz., Arts, Science, Engineering and Technology, and Medicine. Seperate Boards of Studies and Boards of Examiners were constituted in 28 subjects. The University was also administering 12 other educational institutions.

The first Act of the University came in the year 1933 (University of Mysore Act 1933). The first report of the curriculum followed by different departments is available in the University's Calendar 1947-48. The University offered a two-year intermediate Course, three year B.A.(Hons), B.Sc.,(Hons) Degree Courses and M.A., M.Sc., Courses. There were also the faculties of Medicine and Engineering. The University also offered Diplomas in vocational subjects. The University Extension Lectures and Publication Bureau were notable features of the University.

The main campus of the University, created in 1960, lies in a picturesque area of 739 acres at the western end of the Kukkarahalli Lake. The University headquarters, the Crawford Hall, is located right across the lake on the eastern end. This inspiring locale of the campus was aptly named Manasagangotri (Fountainhead of the Ganges of the Mind) by the poet-laureate, Dr. K.V.Puttappa (Kuvempu). In due course, two satellite campuses were set up in response to the demands of post graduate education from semi-urban/rural areas: Sir M.Visvesvaraya Post Graduate Centre at Tubinakere in Mandya, and the Mysore University Post graduate Centre at Hemagangotri in Hassan.

In the beginning, the entire Princely State of Mysore comprising of nine districts came under the jurisdiction of the University. Now it is confined to Mysore, Mandya, Hassan, and Chamarajanagar districts. The remaining areas come under the Bangalore University (1964), Mangalore University (1980), and Kuvempu University (1987). The institution, incidentally, gave birth to one more University in 1996 when the Institute for Correspondence Courses and Continuing Education in the Manasagangotri campus, got transformed into the Karnataka State Open University.

The University now encompasses 122 affiliated colleges and 5 Constituent Colleges (with an aggregate of 53,000 students). In addition, the University has 37 post graduate departments, 8 specialised research & training centres and 2 post graduate centres that together offer about 55 regular academic programmes to 3,500 students. It also runs a number of employment-oriented diploma courses and certificate programmes. The post graduate departments are reputed for excellence in advanced studies and research, and have attracted projects and grants worth crores of rupees from many national and international institutions.

The University has developed excellent infrastructure for curricular and co-curricular activities. The Mysore University Library offers a collection of over 8 lakh books, 2,400 journal titles and 1 lakh volumes of journals. The main campus features an amphitheatre, an auditorium, a swimming pool, and hostels for women and men with modern amenities and comforts.

The University has established a rapport with many well-known and prestigious universities and institutions abroad for academic, technical and cultural exchange.

Having served the cause of higher education and research with distinction and dedication for almost the whole of the 20th century, the University of Mysore now envisages the 21st century as an era of even greater growth and success during which it will produce well-qualified and well-motivated youth to serve humanity as teachers, administrators, doctors, engineers, scientists, lawyers, social workers and in various other fields. As it gets closer to its centenary celebrations, the University looks forward to newer ways of fulfilling the vision of its Founding Fathers.

The University occupies an area of about 1,554 ha. JNKVV represents a well knit and action oriented network of research and education centres in agriculture and allied fields in the State. More than four decades of its existence, it has developed a sound infrastructure and human resources which make it capable of addressing emerging technological challenges in agriculture. JNKVV has produced competent human resource for managing the activities of agriculture and allied sectors and also played a pivotal role in the growth and development of agriculture in the State. Need based research and its dissemination to the peasantry have led to all round improvement in productivity of crops on sustainable basis. Madhya Pradesh is situated in the center of India and bounded on all around by other states. A population of 6,03,85,118 lives in 55393 villages, 285 tehsil, 313 blocks, 45 districts and 10 divisions spread over 308 thousand sq. km geographical area between 21'80 to 26'520N latitude and 74'20 to 82'0E longitude, which is divided by Tropic of Cancer. Nearly 80% of the State population lives in villages. Madhya Pradesh has the largest population of Scheduled Tribes among all the states. The major tribes are Gonds, Bhills, Oraons, Korkens and Kols. Twenty three districts are predominantly tribal. The climate is extreme in the north, temperate and breezy in the plateau and generally hot and humid in the eastern and southern plains. The over all climate varies from semi-arid to sub-humid with hot summer, cool and dry winter with 600-1600 mm mean rainfall range. It is a part of the Deccan Plateau and comprises plateaus and low hills. Except for the valley of Narmada and Tapti, Madhya Pradesh consists of plateaus with mean elevation of 1600 feet above mean sea level, interspread with the mountains of the Vindhya and the Satpura ranges. The maximum height of 1350 m is recorded in Satpura range on the other hand 150 m height is found in Chambal valley. The main river systems are the Betwa, Chambal, Narmada, Sindh and Tapti. Nearly a third of the states area is covered with tropical forest. The economy of the State is primarily agriculture based. Over 75% of people are engaged in agriculture. Over 52.06% of the land area is cultivable. The Malwa region abounds in rich black cotton soil, the low lying areas of Gwalior, Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand have light soil, whereas the Narmada valley is formed of deep rich alluvial deposits. The main food crops are sorghum, wheat, rice and coarse grain such as Kodo, little and Italian millets. Important among commercial crops are pulses, oilseeds, cotton, sugar cane and medicinal crops. The state is poised for a breakthrough in soybean cultivation. First in soybean, oilseed, chickpea and maize production in the country. In the State, Kharif crops occupy 60% and rabi crops 40% area with 71.4 % area under food grain production. Nearly 59% of landholders are marginal, whereas small farmers share 18% of farmland. Low literacy (35.45%), undulating topography, large waste land (13.2%), under developed irrigation potential (23%), low ground water utilization, large proportion of rain fed agriculture (75%), practice of Kharif fallow (3.6%), low cropping intensity (126%), low fertilizer consumption (31 kg/ha), high proportion of low value crops, and high population of low productive live stock are the major constraints of the state.

    University
Government of India with the assistance of the State Government established the biggest multi campus university at Jabalpur, in the heart of India, named after the architect of modern India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru based on the recommendations of Radhakrishnan commission (1949) on the concept of establishment of Agricultural University. An approach was envisaged to narrow down the gap between the experts and farmers through Joint Indo-American Team on Agricultural Research and Education in 1954-55 and 1959-60 on the patterns of Land Grant Colleges of USA. On October 2, 1964, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV) was inaugurated by the then Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Smt. Indira Gandhi.
The Central Administrative Offices of the University are located about 7 km North of Jabalpur town on the National Highway No. 7. The area under the University jurisdiction contains alluvial, deep black, medium black, shallow and light black, mixed red and black, mixed red and yellow and skeletal or gravelly soil. It is low to medium in available nitrogen and phosphorus, and medium to high in available potassium.
JNKVV has produced competent human resource for managing the activities of agriculture and allied sectors and also played a pivotal role in the growth and development of agriculture and live stock production in the state. Need based research and its rapid dissemination in all the part have led to several unproved technologies which over the year are visible in terms of increased production and productivity of crops, egg, milk and meat on sustainable manner. Research on dryland agriculture production system render sustainability to productivity and insured efficient use of natural resources. The State ranks first in pulses, second in oilseeds and third in cereal production at the national level. The State contribution to the national food basket is about 10%.

It has, over the period, emerged as a pioneering institution in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The University has keeping in view its goals, objectives, regional, national and global requirements, developed programmes which may be classified in the following manner:

  • Post-Graduate programmes
  • Under-Graduate programmes in specialized areas

The core programmes are mainly at Masters level while professional, technical and vocational belong to under graduate level. The former includes M.A. in Ancient History & Culture, Applied and Regional Economics, Plant Science, Animal Science, Education, Law and Business Administration. While the latter encompass degree courses in six branches of technology, three courses in specialized education, pharmacy etc. New advanced technologies such as Air Craft Maintenance are on the agenda of the University.

At present there are 21 university departments,17 Government colleges, 29 Government funded affiliated colleges, 108 self- financing colleges. The University runs 36 Post Graduate, 15 under Graduate, 09 Diploma, 20 Post Graduate Diploma, 02 M.Phil and 34 Doctoral Programmes. In most cases syllabi are revised annually.

Various regulatory bodies help in riding rough shods leading to peaceful environment conducive for academics. A regular feedback from faculty members and students improves academic standards in teaching and research.

The university has prepared this self study report keeping in view the strengths and weakness of all programmes, infrastructure and modus operandi. The committee constituted for the purpose gathered inputs from every department of the university to prepare the report. And hence all concerned viz. faculty, officers and students have been consulted in this regard.
