- Located in the heart of India, named after the architect of modern India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, a multi-campus University, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV) was inaugurated by the then Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Smt. Indira Gandhi on October 2, 1964. At present, JNKVV encompasses four Agriculture Colleges (Jabalpur, Rewa, Tikamgarh, Ganjbasoda); one Agricultural Engineering College (Jabalpur); 4 Zonal Agricultural Research Stations (ZARS) (Jabalpur, Powarkheda, Tikamgarh, Chhindwara); 2 Regional Research Stations (Rewa, Sagar); 5 Agricultural Research Stations (ARS) (Dindori, Waraseoni, Garhakota, Sausar, Tendini) and 20 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) (Badgaon, Betul, Chhattarpur, Chhindwara, Damoh, Dindori, Harda, Jabalpur, Katni, Mandla, Narsinghpur, Panna, Powarkheda, Rewa, Sagar, Seoni, Shahdol, Sidhi, Tikamgarh, Umaria) in 6 agro-climatic zones spread over 25 districts of the State. The University occupies an area of about 1,554 ha. JNKVV represents a well knit and action oriented network of research and education centres in agriculture and allied fields in the State. More than four decades of its existence, it has developed a sound infrastructure and human resources which make it capable of addressing emerging technological challenges in agriculture. JNKVV has produced competent human resource for managing the activities of agriculture and allied sectors and also played a pivotal role in the growth and development of agriculture in the State. Need based research and its dissemination to the peasantry have led to all round improvement in productivity of crops on sustainable basis. Madhya Pradesh is situated in the center of India and bounded on all around by other states. A population of 6,03,85,118 lives in 55393 villages, 285 tehsil, 313 blocks, 45 districts and 10 divisions spread over 308 thousand sq. km geographical area between 21'80 to 26'520N latitude and 74'20 to 82'0E longitude, which is divided by Tropic of Cancer. Nearly 80% of the State population lives in villages. Madhya Pradesh has the largest population of Scheduled Tribes among all the states. The major tribes are Gonds, Bhills, Oraons, Korkens and Kols. Twenty three districts are predominantly tribal. The climate is extreme in the north, temperate and breezy in the plateau and generally hot and humid in the eastern and southern plains. The over all climate varies from semi-arid to sub-humid with hot summer, cool and dry winter with 600-1600 mm mean rainfall range. It is a part of the Deccan Plateau and comprises plateaus and low hills. Except for the valley of Narmada and Tapti, Madhya Pradesh consists of plateaus with mean elevation of 1600 feet above mean sea level, interspread with the mountains of the Vindhya and the Satpura ranges. The maximum height of 1350 m is recorded in Satpura range on the other hand 150 m height is found in Chambal valley. The main river systems are the Betwa, Chambal, Narmada, Sindh and Tapti. Nearly a third of the states area is covered with tropical forest. The economy of the State is primarily agriculture based. Over 75% of people are engaged in agriculture. Over 52.06% of the land area is cultivable. The Malwa region abounds in rich black cotton soil, the low lying areas of Gwalior, Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand have light soil, whereas the Narmada valley is formed of deep rich alluvial deposits. The main food crops are sorghum, wheat, rice and coarse grain such as Kodo, little and Italian millets. Important among commercial crops are pulses, oilseeds, cotton, sugar cane and medicinal crops. The state is poised for a breakthrough in soybean cultivation. First in soybean, oilseed, chickpea and maize production in the country. In the State, Kharif crops occupy 60% and rabi crops 40% area with 71.4 % area under food grain production. Nearly 59% of landholders are marginal, whereas small farmers share 18% of farmland. Low literacy (35.45%), undulating topography, large waste land (13.2%), under developed irrigation potential (23%), low ground water utilization, large proportion of rain fed agriculture (75%), practice of Kharif fallow (3.6%), low cropping intensity (126%), low fertilizer consumption (31 kg/ha), high proportion of low value crops, and high population of low productive live stock are the major constraints of the state.
University
Government of India with the assistance of the State Government established the biggest multi campus university at Jabalpur, in the heart of India, named after the architect of modern India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru based on the recommendations of Radhakrishnan commission (1949) on the concept of establishment of Agricultural University. An approach was envisaged to narrow down the gap between the experts and farmers through Joint Indo-American Team on Agricultural Research and Education in 1954-55 and 1959-60 on the patterns of Land Grant Colleges of USA. On October 2, 1964, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV) was inaugurated by the then Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Smt. Indira Gandhi.
The Central Administrative Offices of the University are located about 7 km North of Jabalpur town on the National Highway No. 7. Under an act of Madhya Pradesh Legislature passed in 1963, six Government Colleges of Agriculture and two Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry and 26 Research Stations formed the University.
The University had to part with the creation of a sister universities Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV) at Raipur in 1987, Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Gwalior in 2008 and Madhya Pradesh Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur in 2009.
The area under the University jurisdiction contains alluvial, deep black, medium black, shallow and light black, mixed red and black, mixed red and yellow and skeletal or gravelly soil. It is low to medium in available nitrogen and phosphorus, and medium to high in available potassium.
JNKVV has produced competent human resource for managing the activities of agriculture and allied sectors and also played a pivotal role in the growth and development of agriculture and live stock production in the state. Need based research and its rapid dissemination in all the part have led to several unproved technologies which over the year are visible in terms of increased production and productivity of crops, egg, milk and meat on sustainable manner. Research on dryland agriculture production system render sustainability to productivity and insured efficient use of natural resources. The State ranks first in pulses, second in oilseeds and third in cereal production at the national level. The State contribution to the national food basket is about 10%.

Some historical achievements
l The establishment of Agricultural Research Station, Powarkheda (1903), Agriculture Farm, Chhindwara (1920) and College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Jabalpur (1948) are the historical landmarks.
l Systematic studies on cultivation and breeding of soybean during late 1960's, triggered the oil seed revolution. Its miraculous impact on socio-economic status of farmers and edible oil-sector in India is a landmark.
l At national level, Madhya Pradesh ranks first in pulses, second in oil seeds, third in cereal production and tops in breeder's seed production due to successful research programme of JNKVV which developed 156 varieties of 37 crops.
Research
Multidisciplinary research of applied nature is conducted in National Resource Management, Crop Improvement, Crop Protection, Post Harvest Technology and Farm Machinery. These are well complimented by the units of Statistics, Agricultural Economics, Computer Applications and Instrumentation. Well equipped farms, laboratories, clinics, workshops glass and green houses, library, ARIS and Informatics fulfil the activities of the University.

Teaching
Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya has been the seat of Agro-technology and Human Resource Development in Central India. Its prime mission is to impart education in agriculture and its allied sciences so as to provide human resource for combating the future endowers. The University is imparting education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Faculties of Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering. The Faculty of Agriculture offers two Bachelor's Degree programme (Agriculture and Forestry), through four constituent colleges; Masters degree in thirteen departments and Doctorate degree programme in nine departments apart from Master of Agri-Business Management, vocational course on Dryland Horticulture. The Faculty of Agricultural Engineering offers Bachelor's and Masters and Doctorate Degree in three departments. The ongoing courses for Bachelor degree programme of Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering are offered as per recommendation of 4th Dean's Committee. The course curricula of postgraduate programme have been revised as per ICAR guidelines. Each constitution college has well equipped laboratory, instructional farm, library, computer center, and hostel gymnasium facilities. The system of students' counselling is operating to guide them for higher studies, fellowships as well as employment.
Extension
Directorate of Extension is committed to serve farmers through well - organized network. The channels for the transfer of agricultural and allied technologies are the direct approach to the farmers and indirectly by training of the master trainers of the extension agencies who own the responsibilities of transferring them to the ultimate users. The technologies are being transferred to the farmers through demonstrations, training programme, field days, Kisan Melas, print and electronic media, maintaining a close linkage with State Department of Agriculture and other agencies for technological backstopping, covering almost all the districts of the State. With the motto reach the unreached through extension system. Extension of agricultural technologies is strengthened with the functioning of 20 KVKS in all the sixagro-climatic zones under the jurisdiction of the University.
Profiles of constituent colleges of the University
College of Agriculture, Jabalpur
The college was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister, Shri Ravi Shankar Shukla on July 20, 1955. Initially the classes started in the premises of the college of Veterinary Science, Jabalpur. In 1956 the college was shifted to newly constructed building of Boy's hostel.
Dr. Radhelal Gupta took over as Principal in July 1957. The foundation stone of present building of the college was laid down by Shri Kailash Nath Katjoo on December 1957 and was inaugurated by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on July 12, 1961.
Since its inception, the college has made significant contribution towards human resource development. It imparts quality education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The programmes offered in the faculty of Agriculture include B.Sc. (Ag.) - 8 semesters, M.Sc. (Ag.) - 4 semesters, M.B.A. (Ag.) - 4 semesters, B.Sc. (Agro-forestry - 8 semesters) and Ph.D (minimum 6 semesters). The college has intake capacity of 60 students each year in B. Sc (Ag) with additional 12 payment seats 5 percent seats for NRI's and foreign students and intake capacity in B.Sc. (Agro-forestry) is 15 students every year. A strong post graduate programme in 13 departments namely Agronomy, Agricultural Economics & Farm Management, Entomology, Extension Education, Horticulture, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology, Agricultural Biotechnology, Food Science & Technology, Plant Physiology, Agricultural Statistics and MBA, offer students a wider choice to select the favourite line to higher education and research in agriculture. The Ph.D degree programmes is available in eight departments namely Agronomy, Agricultural Economics & Farm Management, Entomology, Extension Education, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry, (4 seats in each) Plant Pathology & Plant Physiology (2 seats in each). In addition to above seats, an equal number of seats is available on payment basis. ICAR nominees are admitted as per existing rule.
Adequate facilities exist at the college to carry out various research and teaching activities. Computer with Internet facility is available in ARIS cell. In addition to the central library, each department has its own library, which takes care of important books and journals.
Extra - curricular activities include participation in NSS, NCC sports and cultural programmes that help in the multi-dimensional development of the students. The Placement Cell and Capsule Course impart proper guidance and training to students to enable them to compete in the worlds of challenges.
The college is credited with spectacular achievements in basic and applied research. Collaborative research on various crops in respect of variety improvement, productivity enhancement and plant protection are conducted covering vegetables, oilseeds, pulses, fruits, medicinal and aromatic plants etc. the college has linkages with national and international bodies engaged in the field of agricultural research. The total area of Jabalpur campus is 385.15 ha including 26.5 ha under fruit and forest plantations. The net cultivated area available for research and commercial production is 334.40 ha of which, 215.87 ha is under irrigation.
College of Agriculture, Rewa
Established in 1955, this college imparts education in under graduate programme leading to B. Sc (Ag.) degree, with intake capacity of 60 students. Similar to other colleges, additional 12 seats on payment basis and 5% seats for NRI's and foreign nationals are available. Master's degree programme is available in four departments namely Agronomy (5 seats) Agricultural Economics & Farm Management, Extension Education and Horticulture (4 seats in each). The college has 56.03 ha total area including 25.83 ha under roads and buildings, 0.5 ha under pasture, 5.2 ha under fruit plantations and 24.5 ha under cultivation. Irrigation is available in 13 ha only.
The college has established its reputation for research in fruits specially mango, millets and upland rice. Significant works have been done in rainfed/ dry land agriculture. Equally good facilities of library, sports and laboratories are available at this college.
College of Agriculture, Tikamgarh
A new college of Agriculture has been established at Tikamgarh district with the financial support form Mandi Board and has started functioning from the academic session 2004-05, with the intake capacity of 40 students per annum. In addition, 20% payment seats, 5% NRI seats & 15 % ICAR seats are also available.
College of Agriculture, Ganjbasoda (Vidisha)
On September 23, 2006, the College of Agriculture at Ganjbasoda (Vidisha) in Vindhyan plateau has been sanctioned by State Govt. Under infrastructure development fund of Mandi Board, Bhopal. On approval, the college got functioning from July 2009 with 40 UG students.
Dryland Horticulture Research Training Centre, Garhakota (Sagar)
In view of giving priorities of dryland fruits, a new centre as Dryland Fruit Research Station has been started functioning from July 2007 with the mandate of research and extension. Diploma courses on Nursery Management and Post Harvest Technology have also started at this centre.
College of Agricultural Engineering, Jabalpur
This college was established in the year 1966. Being the sole Agricultural Engineering College in the state, it plays a significant role in education, extension and research in its various fields.
Facilities for pursing U. G. programme leading to B.Tech. is available with intake capacity of 40 students every year with additional 10 seats on payment basis and 10 per cent seats for NRI's and foreign nationals. Post graduate degree programme is available in three departments namely Farm Machinery & Power Engg., Post Harvest Process and Food Engineering, and Soil & water Engineering, (6 seats in each) and equal number of payment seats also exists.
The institution has developed several designs of agricultural equipment and credited with significant contributions in the field of energy requirement, post harvest technology, renewable energy, watershed management and agro- climatic etc. About 50 machines have been developed and the technical staff has received a number of prestigious awards.
